Can somebody please tell me the location of the gearbox drain (and presumeably) filler plug. Is it an 8mm square internal, tork, or something else? Thanks folks.

The drain plug is on the final drive casing at the rear and you may need a square section wrench for it, although my own is a hex headed bolt. The level/filler plug is on the end of the box (the bolt at about 4 o.clock) and to reach it you'll need to remove the n/s front wheel and the liner under the wing.

Do both filler and drain have 8mm internal square plugs with no outside hex?
Does anyone know where I can get a magnetic drain plug for the gearbox?

Depending on transmission type (as I don't know the Xantia but I recall the 406) there's a choice of two gearbox's, one for the V6 / 2.1 and the petrol / 1.9D others have a slightly different one with the drain plug in a different place. HDi might be either, probably the 1.9D gearbox for the 90 and the 2.1 for the 110.

Back on topic, I recall the outside of the drain plug if its the one on the back of the diff housing (the 'difficult to get at' one) is 21mm or in some cases 19mm, I seem to remember 21mm was more common.

My gearbox is a BVM ML5T. the drain plug has a rounded exterior face and only the internal square to allow its removal.

I'm getting really fed up!! 3 times in as many weeks I've had the car up on ramps trying to do a gearbox oil change and each time something has stopped me.
Today, try as I might, I could not find the gearbox oil filler plug!! I've checked online, the Haynes manual and searches this forum, but still I can't find out where the filling point is located. A completely wasted morning!!
Its definately not the bolt in the 4 o clock position on the gearbox, that one is just an ordinary bolt. I can't see it anywhere under the airfilterbox, nor can I see a breather which I could use for filling.
Can anyone help please?

The gearbox filler/level plug is located on the back of the diff housing on all ML5T gearboxes. The most user friendly place PSA could find to fit it! A long bit of tubing down the back of the engine and a funnel are required to refill.

The BOL, in this repect, is sorely lacking, as it is in most aspects.

Ah yes, same place as the 406 manual V6 :( , much fun and easy to get a free oil shower if not careful.

That looks about it...

One has been known to cheat in the past and drain it and refill 1.8 litres through the reverse switch hole after removing it. It's just a tad more accessible.

Refill with 75W/80 oil and nothing else...

Agreed, Jim, much easier that way! Attach a length of tubing to a funnel or a litre oil bottle and it's even easier.
The level plug is of limited use to those of us without a proper lift, as it's difficult to get the car level enough on ramps or axle stands.

Well after 4 attempts I've finally got the oil change done.
Thanks for your help guys.
I tried to use the reverse switch hole, certainly looks a lot easier, but none of my sockets would fit, seems to require a long reach 21mm? socket. So I used the funnel and tube method, using the filling tube from the bottle taped to the end of a 1m plastic tube taped to a funnel with gaffa tape... now stored in a safe place ready for next year!

Box/tube spanners can be a lifesaver when you need a really long reach and are generally fairly inexpensive.

We refilled my mate's ML6 box (outwardly similar) through the breather - the plastic cap just pulls off and away you go. It's best of course if put the drive shafts back in before you fill the box - I was out buying new LDS at the time :lol:
