C5 Brakes Problems

Post by ggonline »

Last night driving home, 1/4 mile from home I was finding I was rolling to a stop with my foot to the floor on the brake pedal, when I got home there was a smell coming from the brakes, as if they were really hot, not gone out to check them this morning yet, so hoping there are no big issues now they have cooled down.

Not sure if this has caused it, but on the motorway 20 mins before it happened I had to brake very hard to the point of slamming on at 70 mph to an almost stop instantly.

Anyone else had this problem with a C5?

Check your brake fluid. I had this but it was after someone replaced pads. It was very hard to stop, I had to creep back to the garage.

I would say the master cylinder has failed, possibly between chambers.

It's uncommon, but happens when fluid changes are neglected.

My money is on a seized hand brake cable on the front, causing the brake to bind, followed by boiling the fluid in the caliper. Probably apparently OK when it's cooled down, but need to check the temp of the front wheels regularly till establish which one is playing up. Mind you, after you've stripped out the exhaust to get the guide tube out, you might as well do both sides anyway...
