2005 C5 2.0 HDi clutch & DMF - how much?

Post by GB »

I think my C5 is going to need a new clutch and DMF. Very soon.

It all started happening last week, making grinding noise when releasing the clutch pedal, especially noisy in reverse, and then in first when taking off. Definitely nosier when cold and low revs, the sound disappears when releasing the clutch pedal at 1000rpm+. So I can drive it "quietly" with only slightly higher revs. Also the idle sound is different when you press the clutch in, you can definitely hear some faint rattling noises. Gear change is smooth as usual.

Anyway, since it had to happen exactly when we're buck broke (I'm really hoping this can wait for a couple of months) I need to find out how much the £££ damage is going to be.

So you can get a LUK clutch kit for £126 and DMF for £202 or £262. The £202 one is "7 teeth and 20A max free play" and the £263 is "9 teeth and 23A free play" - what's the difference? Plus £5 DMF bolts.

The only unknown at this stage is the expected labour charge: how long would it take to replace both clutch and DMF on a 2005 2.0HDi?

I paid £498 inclusive for mine in 2009. There were a few other minor jobs done at the same time.

Not sure on your differences clutch wise, a decent parts man would narrow it down to one clutch, I don't pay that much for a clutch, but then I buy lots, it's worth asking the dealers, because sometimes they are cheaper than the aftermarket.
I assume your car is a MK11 C5, they are not a lovely job, the subframe will need to be dropped and there is a framework that holds the radiator etc, this has to come off. Once everything is out the access is pretty good. It takes my tec a whole day to do one of these, but we don't rush and break stuff, a clutch centre would probably do one in about 6 hrs.
The worst one is the Peugeot 407, or the MK111 C5 without hydraulic suspension, the driveshafts are horrendous to get removed by comparison.

8V 110BHP or 16V 136BHP? There's a quite a bit of difference in the clutch (and the price!). I've done a 16V and it's not fun: C5 clutch change

Dealer prices for the 16V clutch and flywheel (note there was a different part number on later cars, but not till Sept 2007):

Part Number Description Quantity Price excl. VAT Price incl. VAT Total incl. VAT Selection
00002052N2 CLUTCH KIT 240.00 GBP 288.00 GBP 288.00 GBP

00000532T0 CLUTCH DUAL FLYWHEEL 469.59 GBP 563.51 GBP 563.51 GBP

Euro Car Parts are doing 20% discount for all orders placed via their website at the moment if that helps? Just use the code ALL20 in the promo box when you place your order. I just ordered 5 litres of fully synth oil + oil filter for £23 delivered. O:)

Keep a watch on Ebay there are frequently offers on there of genuine clutches at huge discounts, I was fortunate enough to get one for under £40. for my 2.0 HDI.

I got the clutch changed on my 56 2.0 16v 138 HDi C5 at the start of last year. It cost me just short of £700 all in, that was for genuine clutch kit, LUC DMF, gearbox seal and oil. Along with the labour to fit it, its quite an involved job, subframe down etc.

The clutch on my dads 05 C5 estate 2.0HDi 138 16v has been making an awful noise for a while now. With the clutch pressed it makes an awful wearing and grinding noise, which does come and go. The noise can be felt as vibration through the pedal too, sometimes its very loud and other times its almost gone. The clutch doesnt judder or slip, it wors as it should other than the awful noise. It must have done 6-8K miles like this! I keep banging on at my dad to have the clutch changed but he is putting it off! That car is almost on 100K miles and is the original clutch.

That sounds like a dried up release bearing, you really need to get it fixed or you're likely to find yourself stranded out on the road.
It eventually burns its way through the pressure plate fingers then you're without a clutch altogether.

Yep, this is the kind of noise my clutch is making.

The noise is there when releasing the clutch pedal with less than 1000rpm. Give it some revs and the noise disappears.

Exactly what my mate's was doing - the release bearing was knackered, and there was alu dust coming out of the bottom of the DMF. Either way, the box needs to come out, then you can assess the state of the DMF.

Yep, It does need doing pretty urgently. At the moment the car has a remodelled rear end, so that needs fixing too!

Finally had the clutch and DMF done today - it was quite noisy over the past few days. The DMF was in very bad shape, lots of free play, rattling and bolts quite worn. The clutch wasn't too bad for the milage (95K miles), but the bearing was on its last legs.

The total damage? £493

LUK clutch kit £103
LUK DMF £228
LUK DMF bolts £2
labour £160
