C3 Diesel - Opinions please?

Post by ragger »

At the moment I have too many cars and am seriously considering shuffling two out for one in. The "new" car needs to fulfil a range of criteria as follows:
Under £2.5k, preferably a bit less
Cheap to insure as it will have three young named drivers on the policy
Cheap to run
Easy to drive for the less experienced
Not too small as I am a big chap and it will be my runabout for short trips.
Reasonably comfortable
Reasonably reliable

At the moment I am inclined towards the C3 1.4 diesel in the Desire level of trim.

Comments on these and suggestions for alternatives would be helpful. I have toyed with going back to a 1.4 BX but have decided I want something with more modern safety provision.

Rob

My eldest daughter has currently a C3 1.4 petrol that I discovered was far better than I expected it to be. My second daughter lives near you (Long Newton) and I have been down there in it a couple of times and found it to be quite pleasant for a small car.
A few cars ago she had a C3 1.4 HDi and was very pleased with it. Quite nippy, very cheap to run, tax and insure.

Just don't expect it to be on a par with an hydropneumatic Citroen.

We have a C3 diesel 1.4 16valve, I actually didn't like it at first, but having used it a fair bit now I think it is superb.
Ours has done 297000 miles, it still returns well over 50 mpg. The gearbox is about dead now due to being ran out of oil several times by the previous owner, however it is still very rapid, with snow tyres on will go anywhere. Bad points are that the ride is a bit jiggly, due to the low tec rear beam axle, that's about it, it's quite spacious, and costs £30 per year to tax.
