Berlingo 1.9 diesel engine problem

Post by Jody »

Can anyone help? I have an 01 Berlingo with a strange problem. If the rpm's get below 2000 the engine can get very noisy, which lasts between 5 to 10 seconds, accompanied by a lack of power. The engine will then return to normal. It tends to do it more when the engine is warmed up, and happens whether up hill, down hill or on the level. Been to a couple of local garage's but they have no ideas.
Thanks.

This to me sounds like the pump is failing to set the timing correctly and is therefore causing the engine to run over-advanced and hence the noise...

That, sadly, is as far as I can go as I'm not familiar with the pump used on the DW8 engine and how it adjusts timing... Hopefully those who are will perhaps amplify a bit...

Else that, for faults like this it is never a good idea to go to a normal dealer, Citroen or otherwise. You need to visit a good diesel specialist.

99% of DW8's are Lucas pumps. Models from 99 have the electronic advance pump. I cannot recall if they have the needle lift sensor arrangement as per the XUD or if they have the pressure sensor inbetween the delivery pipes as per the TUD5B, I suspect the former actually.

Does your engine management light ("K" light) work at all ? , It should be on with the ignition briefly if nothing else then either go out after a couple of seconds or go out when the engine is running. Assuming it works and the bulb is not awol does it come on when it starts to run badly ?

If you have a tachometer in the panel does that work correctly when its running badly (ie not jumping around) ?

My initial thought apart from a Diag session is the lift sensor but a diag would no doubt confirm or otherwise. It could be the potentiometer on the control arm with a dodgy part track or suchlike but I think that would be quite rare.

Thanks for the reply. The engine management light seems to be working fine,it doesn't come on when the problem occurs. The tachometer does not deviate at all when the problem occurs. I took a look on another forum and a couple of guys on there have experienced a similar problem but no answers were forthcoming.
Thanks again.

Odd as I'd expect the light to come on if there was any problem detected. It may be worth taking the multiplugs off the pump and just checking them for corrosion etc, I'm starting to wonder if its a slightly bad connection but then again I'd expect the light to be one.

An internal pump fault would be quite rare and I'd think if that did manifest itself it would be there all the time.

Like Jim, I'm unfamiliar with the DW8, but from your second post I'll venture to extend his diagnosis that the advance is not being correctly reduced when the revs drop. It's not the crankshaft sensors otherwise the rev counter would go beserk and/or the engine management light would come on. So the ECU probably isn't detecting fault, in which case a (costly) diagnostic session wouldn't reveal the cause. I'd look for a bad connection at the pump first. If there's a wire to one of the injectors that indicates a needle lift sensor so check this wire and its connections.
It could be the advance mechanism in the pump is sticking - if you buy cheap DERV, the pump might well be a bit gummed up, so treat the fuel tank to a dose of fuel system cleaner.

Thanks for the information. I have been out and bought some injector cleaner and put it in the fuel tank. I intend getting it serviced when the snow has gone, as I have only owned the vehicle 3 weeks and have no idea when it last had a service.
Thanks again.

The timing on these pumpsis controlled by ecu via the advance solenoid. The solenoid is on the side of the pump facing the radiator and is a small cylinder at 90 degrees to the pump body.it should have a rubber cover on it held on by a small cable tie.Follow the wiring back to the connection on the side of the pump.Check the plug for continuity and also the wiring back to the ecu.If you unscrew the solenoid and connect it up to 12v you should hear a click if its working. The solenoids are around £50 on ebay.
