2CV Question

Post by Fake Concern »

I have heard that my cousin is to buy another 2CV. He already has one rotting in his garden & another rotting, but still being used. Anyway apparently the new one is automatic (this is according to my mother, who is 85 and knows nothing of cars, even Citroens!). Is this right is there such as a thing as a 2CV auto?

I'm not aware they ever made a 2cv auto or fitted them with the C-matic 3 speed auto box thing that was in the GS..

Some were fitted with a centrifugal clutch assembly so you could drive in town without using the clutch pedal.
The one in the pic looks too late for that to be the case though.

I've heard of the ones with the centrifugal (traficator or something maybe it was called ?) clutch but never seen one. I expect it was the standard 4 speed box just with a modified clutch assembly.

EDIT... Just occured to me a Trafficator is the popup indicator 'stalk' on the 'B' pillar.

your close Andy
twas called a traficlutch,

which has a clutch disc and centrafugal shoes around the edge,
you could sit at junction/traffic lights with the clutch engaged at tick over, to move away just add gas,

you still had to change gear in the conventional way with the pedal though once under way

I was just picturing a 2CV with a 4HP20 attached to it  I don't think that idea will fly or even drive for that matter...

I should think an A-series engine would just about have enough power to drive the 4HP20 oil pump 8-)

On the contrary, I think a V6 2CV would probably fly pretty well  =D>

Fly? I think it would possibly achieve low-earth orbit... :P

I'd love to put a V6 in one. It'd have to be in the back, sadly.

If one (and uncomplete one) with a standard 1299 GSA motor (and Mini speedo) goes like this in testing

" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Just imagine what one with a V6 would go like!

An automatic 2cv just wouldnt do  The gearchange is far too much fun to be without!

I remember my dad telling me a tale about my gran when she first drove a Renault 4 (same gearchange as a 2cv). She got in, hung her handbag on the gearstick and said "oh, thats good, is it automatic?"

Totally concur, this raises the question 'why would you want an automatic 2cv?'

First time my dad drove a 2cv he butchered the shifting but after that he couldn't miss a beat if he tried. It comes to you so naturally. I learned to drive double declutching in a 2cv and now, from what I learned about timing, I don't even bother using the clutch. I just listen to what the engine and gearbox are doing and slip it into gear when it's ready without so much as a growl.

Everyone should learn to drive stick-shift in a 2cv.
If it ain't broken, you ain't trying.
