The HDi Xantia is well knwon for being able to cover high mileages without any problems. As ever, with any car check that it has been well kept and the clutch is good etc.

If its cheap enough, then there is little to lose.

What model is it? Forte, LX, SX or Exclusive?

GET IT!

210k is a good milage to get one. I say this for a few reasons. Firstly, it should of had most of the useual faults that occur at around 100 to 120k all done. However, it could well be on its first clutch.

Heater matrix could of been done by now, but its no real proof, theres ways to tell if they are on the way out or not.

I bought my HDi exclusive at 156k.. Bottom pully was rattleing like a bag of spanners, and it was loosing water. However, after a cam belt and water pump change, the water pump was leaking and a new bottom pully NOTHING much else has been done. I assumed the clutch original at 156k, then it started slipping at 200k, then STOPPED again! Even Now when I pull my trailer with a car on it, it does not slip at 231k...

The HDi 110 clutch's are strange things.. They will slip for a day or two maybee three.. then all of a sudden stop and be perfectly fine again for a while. I also assume mine is on original heater which strangle has not given out and needed replacment. Theres slight evidence of it not being done in that the scuttle is on the original "Impossible to cut without cracking the screen" goo that holds the scuttle on...

210k is very little on a HDi, as long as she starts withing 4 turns and idles smoothly from the off....!! Head gaskets are far better and longer lasting being multilayer steel gasket, and rarely go, unlike XUD ones... Thats NOT to say they dont go.. its just a bit rarer...

Anyway, thats my useless bit of experiance Ive had with them, and Ive seen a few.

Rear end easy its only the rear height correcter linkages seized up.. nothing major ...

Di engines are a little coarse then idi engines... how it started was the important thing.. it hasn't done 50k...

If it was more noisy than a 1.9TD I would have walked away too! The HDi is a much more refined engine that the XUDs.

But surely, using this theory, its due all the so called 100/120K faults again at 200/240K? :?

Having had a C5 from 108K to 150K, it didn't have any teething trouble getting from that mileage to this.

I think sometimes its luck of the draw to be honest. Also, how the car has been used, where and its servicing has a lot to account for.

Prehaps chris, but mines not prooved that... I dont know. To be honest at the moment, I wouldn't even listen to me..

I really DO NOT know what im talking about at the moment... Load of crap most of the time, but useually personal experiance, like the C5 customer had.. NOTHING but trouble!! Really BAD.. Sold it last week for scrap money to someone!!

Don't be down on yourself Paul, for all I know things could start failing at 100-120K.

I would think your customer found a bad car there, if I had so much trouble with C5s I wouldnt have had three. They have been great :-D

C5s almost need a Lexia as a compulsary item to talk to the car and do anything to them....

C5 checks... um, rear calipers corode in WORSE then Xantias, and can be soo bad they dig into the rear disks... rear disks are bigger and twice as expensive as Xantias...

Hand brake cables and cable guides can cause problems..

Front calipers can be a siezure problem....

Rear passenger door can stick on lock if the child lock is used.. can only be freed by removing rear door card, which you can do with the door shut...

Knock at the rear on bumps, rear subframe bush worn..

Drop links as per ALL Citroens with them...

Those are the items that jump out for checking on the C5... Go for as LATE as possible and get the prooven 2.oi 8v HDi..Early 2.2's can be trouble some certainly if you get injector problems.

C5s are not bad cars and I would class them as among the most reliable of more modern cars. Providing you get a good one with the right engine. However the faults Paul listed are entirely possible.

Ah, I've seen the fix for this:

Some stronger tape and it would be as good as new ...
