Spotted the tell tale exhaust on the HDI which tells me I've got an Eberspacher heater. It's not working which according to the indy is standard, they've never seen one working.
What I'd like to know is where it's located and how difficult is it to repair.
I've done a forum search and it would seem there's a glowplug involved. Fitting a new one would be the first thing to try, I imagine, are they 'normal' glowplugs, or any recommendations?
A google search threw up 42,000 results, seems they're very popular with truckers and the boating fraternity.
What is it that activates them?

Jim did a repair/refurbish on his a while back and somewhere on the forum there is his walk-through of how he did it.
The ones we used were on a timer with a thermostatic cut out. (Volvos in Sweden) but that was a few years back now and no doubt they have evolved since then.

I didn't know my 406 had one until I noticed warm air from the heater at about 200 yards, it seems to work perfectly and the car has done 211,000 miles!

I must have done one but I can't recall now. I know I did a full write-up in the Citroenian though... In the February 2012 issue...
The two very common faults is a duff Glowplug or a seized blower motor...
To test you can bypass the engine ECU control - it normally fires up is the ambient temperature is below 7 degrees - by linking pins 3 and 5 on in the relay base next to the pink headlight washer relay. Link the puins after removing the green relay normally resident in the base.

If you need a new glow plug for it, give me a shout. I bought one for ours before realising it was the fan that was seized.
Unfortunately someone ran into the back of the car before I got a chance to get the thing sorted so the glow plug isn't needed.

Having had a good read through I now have a few more questions.
Can you access it by removing the arch liner, or peeling it back?
Do you have to remove/disconnect it to change the glowplug?

Damned if I can find it but I haven't given up yet.
Been trying to fix my daughter's dishwasher most of the day, without success.

You need to loosen the N/S/F bumper mountings then pull back the arch liner, you can change the glow plug without disconnecting it but its much easier if you do remove it, simply clamp the water hoses unplug the loom plug then 3 or 4 nuts, not difficult.isisalar wrote:Having had a good read through I now have a few more questions.

If the unit doesn't make any noises whatsoever then it may well simply be the glow plug as when that's U/S the unit stays asleep whereas if it squeaks it'll be the fan motor. If you do remove the glow plug make sure you upend the whole unit as it may be flooded and requires draining as the wire gauze will be soaked and prevent it firing up.
