Wheel nut key damaged

Post by spako »

I wanted to bleed my brakes today when I realised that my wheel nut key is damaged - one pin is missing and another one is loose.
I managed to loosen 3 of 4 wheel nuts using the damaged key but there is not enough grip on the last one.

Quick trip to my local Citroen dealer confirmed the price of a new key - £58.60.
The thing is that I'm not sure if the locking nuts are the original ones hence I'm not prepared to risk this money.

Any idea how I can remove the last nut without spending a fortune?

Usual solution is to get a 1/2" drive socket slightly smaller than the locking nut, and use a large hammer to belt it on. Once it's on, use a breaker bar to remove it.

Don't think it would work on this type of screw.

mikes method will work if you have the space to get a socket on the other way is to take it to a tyre fitting place and ask them to remove it. its well worn never seen one that bad. have a new set ready to put on.

Looks very similar to the ones on my old Activa that needed the hammer and socket treatment. Worked just fine.

Am I right thinking that the OEM alloys require the flat seat nuts like these:

First thing I did when I bought that C5 of mine I threw those locking bolts as far as I could and got a set of regulars. If someone wants to steal those original Citroen rims then be my guest :D

Of course situation here in Finland might differ from other countries.
In Finland we have this thing called Reilu Meininki

That looks exactly the same as the ones I had on my old C5. After trying loads of things including sockets and big hammers, specialist nut removers, universal things, ended up with the drill and about 6 bits and a large amount of swearing to get the last one off. Try slackening the other three nuts and driving the car. You might be lucky and slacken it off, or break it. Not at 70 on a motorway though!!!!!!!!!!!

Not down here it's not. I've rarely locked my car in 5 years of living here, and I only live 6 miles out of the centre of Reading. I've just ordered 4 replacement standard wheel bolts for my C5 then I can remove the lockers. They're a total pain in the bottom.
