Xantia HDi STOP Light

Post by Rhothgar »

Oh dear! Forgot to post earlier as have been extremely busy.

Have to take Sylvia to Stansted early tomorrow and the STOP light is flashing on the HDi in sync with a red dot over the temperature gauge but temperature is certainly with limits (below 75) providing gauge is correct!!!!

Would hate to break down on the way or coming back.

Sure it 's nothing serious but would like a view on it from one of the resident forum experts please!

Haven't checked water level yet but will do in the morning.

Not sure if the HDi suffers the same Bitron issues as Cassy does, where it thinks it is over heating when it isn't.
The level being low will bring on the stop and overheat lights.

Could be down to one of the cooling fans not operating when the A/C is running, either turn off A/C or move the direction control to the floor as A/C runs when airflow is directed to the screen.

Are you sure the A/C comes on by itself in the demist setting ? I can't say I've ever noticed this behaviour in either my S1 or S2 Xantia's... does the A/C light come on when this happens ?

Yes, the A/C does come on in the de-mist setting (well, it does on Gracie and it did on my previous Xantia. Both are S2). You can tell this as when you turn off the engine with demist on, you can hear the compressor spinning down. No, the A/C light does not come on, as the switch is not in the 'ON' position.

EDIT; The STOP light on with the dot in the temperature gauge could be due to low coolant level. I'd check this out.

Yes certainly does on a S2 and no the A/C light does not illuminate to announce that the A/C is operating.

NO NOPE it DOES NOT do this on ALL S2 cars!! I PROMISE YOU!

Ive only seen this happen on a W reg LX and Y reg LX.. Ive been involved with over 10 S2 models and I have found the following:

NONE of the cars Pre W reg 2000 cars switch the Air Con on automatically on Window Demist. My V reg Exclusive does NOT do it. My mates T reg Exclusive does NOT do it. My mates V reg LX does NOT do it. a T reg SX I had did NOT do it. My first T reg SX Did NOT do it.. nor did any other S, T or V reg cars...

However, A W reg Last revision car I had LX DOES do it. An X reg SX car DOES do it, and mums Y reg LX also DOES it... so it appears to be certain models or Years that feature this setup and not ALL of them.

NB: The cars that it dodnt work above, the Air Con worked PERFECTLY in all the cars..

As for your problem Roger, as said above, its indicating a problem with a cooling fan or both of them. As long as the Temp guage stays correct then you will be fine!

SERIES One cars Never had the feature at all...

Sorry Paul but it's certainly been the case on all of the S2's I've ever had dealings with (1998 - 2000 model year) in addition to a late 97 'R' reg S1 VSX from when when the A/C ECU's were updated.

On my T reg Aug. '99 HDI Exclusive estate the air con DOES come on when screen demist is selected but the telltale light on the aircon switch doesn't illuminate until the switch is depressed :?

How strange, I seem to get ALL the models that are non standard. None of the Exclusives Ive had/Got have had the Ebersachtsher heater fitted either! Which Im glad, because theres little enough room for a clutch change without them in place as it is, and enough fuel is used already at 55mpg with out more being used...

I'm almost certain that my 97 Series 1 VSX did not turn the A/C on automatically with the demist setting - the click from the compressor clutch was quite obvious on that car even from inside with the windows shut, and the compressor spindle was also easily visible with the bonnet open so I'm sure I would have noticed it when working on the car if it did. It's half a world away so I have no way to confirm it though...

I'm not so sure about my current '98 S2 - I'll check next time I'm tinkering to see for sure. One thought about some S2 cars apparently doing it and not others is it could be a fault with the contacts in the air direction slider... I notice that sometimes I don't get the fan speed boost when I switch to demist while other times I do (in fact the auto fan setting has a bit of a mind of its own...) so if that's the switch contacts being a bit dodgy that might also affect any auto A/C function...

Yes, I can confirm. All the S2s I've had do fire up the A/C on demist, including my ex-DickieG V6 which is a very early S2...

My XM does the same as well....

(or it would if the A/C worked  )
