XM 2.5 Clutch Replacement

Post by addo »

Righto, it's an aircon car so there is a condenser flapping about that I can't remove. My understanding is that you can't remove the box alone.

Nosecone off, slam panel off, radiator/hoses out. Harness disconnected. Clutch slave unbolted.

Then do I unhook the alternator, pump and compressor from the drivetrain, pop the driveshafts and angle the driveline out the bottom, gearbox end pointing down?

How much should I be charging in labour, or to put it another way how many chargeable hours are in it from start to finish?

Massive job Im told Addo.. The real two experts are Robert Smart, and Xmexclusive..

May be a better idea to post this also on Club-xm.co.uk too..

Me I refuse to do them.. HOWEVER I have read since that it can be done in situ.. Cant remember who it was though.

Id say... £1000 garage prices .. or 1500 bucks!

The man to ask about clutch replacement on a 2.5 TD XM is Norrie or Noz from the club-xm forum.

I know for a fact that he has completed a clutch change on a 2.5 without removing the engine. Apparently there is enough room to slide the box out of the way but not enough if you want to remove it.

Thanks, gents. It's worse than usual (for us) being an ex-UK car so there will likely be a good spread of rusted up bolts in the way...

I had been asked "Would I do it for $500 labour?"

Flick-passed the job to a madder person than I. He's presently struggling with it.

Hey Adam? There has to be easier ways to make money in a booming economy than work like that?

You could do better cutting grass or cleaning windows man! :-D

Indeed, that's why I was happy to leave it to another. Even this morning - which paid badly, being mates' rates - paid better hourly.

some jobs are better left to someone braver or more desperate! I've never done an XM but I did quite a few 2.0l CXs back in the day and you could squeeze the gearbox sideways enough to fish the clutch out. About 5 hours all in on them. The 2.4 and 2.5 was engine out though! 12 hours! Doubt I'l ever get asked now
