injector tightening

Post by ralph »

Hope this is simple one - my 1990 year XUD 1.7 engine has a Lucas pump, but I can only read the words "made in France" on the injectors.
Can I assume they are CAV/Lucas injectors? (they're the originals as far as I know)
The reason for the query is Lucas injectors are screwed in a good bit tighter than Bosch injectors, and I don't want to strip threads if they may be Bosch units - thanks

Hi Ralph -
The injectors are different to Bosch & Lucas injection systems - would probably not work satisfactory if mixed.
With a Lucas pump you then also have the Lucas injectors.
You MUST use a torque-read bar torquing up the injectors - and better be a bit on the low side rather than overdoing them.
Note the injectors have a "fire seal ring" - ensure it's inserted correct - with the protrusion on the ring upwards against the jet.
Get new rings from your nearest diesel/injection specialist. They are only a few pence each.

Anders - the difference between the torque settings is something like Bosch 66lb/ft and Lucas 96lb/ft.
It's only one injector I've had out – it was leaking so I changed the washer and fire seal washer.
To be safe I tightened it to 66lb/ft and it isn't leaking now, despite not being as a tight as a Lucas injector should be.
On your advice I'll leave it there unless I get problems – the thread in the head is a bit chewed, even though I doubt it's ever been touched before now.
