I suspect, strictly, yes as the rules state if the car was originally fitted with a cat then one must be visibly present..

Being a diesel though I'd have thought there's every chance it'll be OK as having a diesel cat fitted has never been 'law' in the UK in the same way a petrol cat is...

There's been no reports of a decatted diesel falling foul on here so I reckon you'll be OK Greg...

Oh, they're always changing Simon. Difficult to keep up with it sometimes

Basically, if a (petrol) car had a cat when it left the factory it must have one fitted when presented for MOT irrespective of whether or not it will pass the emissions test without one.

I fell foul of this with my XM. Technically it doesn't need a cat to pass the emissions test when running on LPG but because it had a cat fitted as standard it had to have one visibly present to satisfy the MOT. Originally mine didn't and hence now why it sports a kitten under it's belly...

Cat only required for spark ignition cars the 'qualify for a CAT test' - no mention of diesels. And the diesel test still only measures smoke opactity, nothing else - although the limits have been tightened for post 2008 (I think) cars. Oddly test is still required of DPF equipped cars, even though the result, if it's working, is likely to be an error reading on the machine (this is covered in the regs, and they have to attach the faulty reading slip!) - a visual inspection would do for these - if it's working, the tailpipe is spotless. This would save revving the nuts of the engine needlessly - but then that would require common sense from VOSA / HMG....

Fat chance of that ever happening Richard

Two miles Greg  Gosh, your MOT man must live practically next door

Having said that, mine’s about half a mile away, if that... Certainly within easy walking distance anyway, even by my standards...

No Jim,
Thats where the MOT garage is---he passed the car, then delivered it back to my house- where it went straight back in the garden. :-D
