BX - gearchange rod part no, please!

Post by JimW »

Hi,
I've just had the fore-aft gearchange rod fail on my BX. From a quick look on the forum, this seems to be quite common and mine failed where they usually do - the forward (gearbox end) balljoint socket.

I think Citroen call this rod the "lower" one - it's the long, longitudinal rod that has a balljoint at each end and runs from the bottom of the gearstick to the gearbox.

My local Citroen dealer gave me a part number of 95495340. I later found a dealer who had one in stock, and got it sent - after they confirmed that this is the correct part no.

Of course it isn't the right part at all...

Mine is about an inch longer and includes a bend - which really is necessary. It also includes a rubber collar, just to the rear of the bend.

95495340 is dead straight, is made from smaller diameter tube and has no rubber collar. I suspect that it's for a BX14.

As I'm now sure that 95495340 is not the right part for my car, does anyone know what the correct part number is, please?
Or, even better, know where I can get hold of the correct rod?

Thanks,
Jim.

Hi Jim,

Looking at Citroen Service, it looks like its 95 495 341 .... This shows a Kink in the Rod... Looks like all XU engines use this one, and the 340 one you got is for 1360cc TU engines only.

You may have a job though, like all BX stuff, it is now showing NFP on the Service site..

Update...

I've spoken to a few people this morning, the consensus is that the part I want is 96071597 - which is still available (although on back order until a bit later in the month).

The picture the dealer sent me seems about right - there is a (small) bend shown, and what looks like a collar, too.

Before I go ahead and order it up (I mean pay for it up front, really), can anyone confirm that this is actually what I'm looking for?

Thanks again,
Jim.

Thanks for the response Malcolm!

That sounds about what the Citroen dealers have been telling me today.

The only problem I've got is with the dimensions - my old rod (which is now off the car) is approx. 702mm long and 17mm diameter - balljoint socket centres are roughly 685mm. Whilst the ...340 that I was supplied with last week is approx. 683 long and 12mm diameter.

It isn't possible, is it, that ...597 is simply a replacement for ...340 ?
