BX steering columm movement

Post by Iain Haddock »

My mothers BX has just developed an up and down movement of 1/2" at the steering wheel. Does anyone know if there is a bush or bearing at the bottom of the shaft. The movement appears to be side to side (and possibly up and down)here. It does@nt appear to be the uj joint.[?]

Classic BX problem [:)]
The steering axle has a bush both ends. Depending of what end of the axle seems to have the most play - look for a popped out bush here.
The lower bush is simply pressed up/in again - then held with a worm clip on axle. Should not be necessary to remove the cowling. The upper bush is seen at the instant the steering axle is removed : unclip the middle padding from steering wheel - then unscrew the nut and wriggle free the steering wheel. Push down the bush if it has popped out. Try peening a bit on its seating - to keep the bush in place.
remove ignition key & lock the steering - to ensure the steering wheel is refitted straight ahead (or as usual).
