Depollution fault

Post by johntom »

Hi
Just gone up the road in my newly acquired C5 2.0 hdi 138 and the EMl has come on, along with the message 'depollution fault'? My generic code reader beings up p1351 and p1352? Aren't these heater circuit fault codes?

Hi so would those codes cause the depollution message and limp mode or will there be other codes that my generic reader won't have picked up?

it should be in the hand book it goes something like drive above 40mph for 30 mins or something like that someone will be on soon to tell you assumeing your car has a particulate filter that is

Regeneration:

Take it out on the motorway late at night is best (less traffic) put her in 3rd or 4th and drive at about 3500 rpm for about 6 minutes should kick it in burns out the soot in the particle filter if you have one. when it kicks in you can see a fluctuation in the mpg read out as it over fuels as part of the heating process.

If you haven't seen it, here's the link to an issue with the DPF, including the Watchdog article. I hope its useful to know;

Only had chance to give it a quick blast up a 1 mile long empty road at around 3500 rpm, when i stopped and restarted, the eml and warning had gone off. Unfortunately when i got home i moved the car onto the drive and both were back on ! I have ordered a Lexia today so i will read all the codes and report back. Could it be the eolys fluid is low or would that be a different message to depollution fault ?

Depollution fault is just the generic engine management warning - Lexia will tell you what fault code it has thrown, and this should point you in the direction of the problem. Eolys should be refilled at around 75k.

Gracie doesn't have a DPF, so I don't have this problem. However, what you are trying to do is to cook the crud off the filter, and this is done over time (several minutes) when the exhaust is hot enough (so 3500 RPM is generating the heat required). The main thing is to get it hot enough for long enough for the regen cycle to complete properly. The best trick is as horsedentist posted; a late night motorway run to hit the requirements. This needs to be done on a regular basis to keep the DPF clean (but I don't know what the intervals are, probably mileage based on type of driving you do). Long distance drivers don't have to worry about this, as they usually are on the motorways, so the filter remains hot enough to stay clean.

Provided the filter is not clogged you don't have to try very hard to get it to regen. Normal driving at 40-50 will be enough for an active re-gen, if you drive it on the m-way then it can do a passive re-gen whereby the exhaust gas is hot enough without needing post-injection of diesel. Ours (C4 GP 1.6 HDi 110) goes on the school run which is only about a mile (I know - but have you tried dragging a recalcitrant 4 year old a mile up hill???), and potters about town with longer runs of 10 miles once or twice a week, and m-way runs about once a month and this has been enough to keep it regenned happily so far without getting a warning. It's difficult to know if it's doing it or not - although on a cold or wet day you may realise that the rear screen heater has come on without switching it on which is a give away.
