Speedometer no longer working

Post by begins »

Hi all,

My speedometer has decided to call it a day :-D . RPM meter is still working fine.

Initially, the needle would move but it seems to lag behind the actual speed as time goes by. Finally, the needle decided to stay below 0 and no longer move.

Is this something that I can DIY and fix it? I'm thinking aloud that it might be a matter of replacing a blown fuse or changing a gear that move the needle.

Can someone advise me on this?

Thank you very much in advance.

Stepper motor in the head broken, they can be bought and are a fairly easy diy job to fit. There used to be a 'how to' thread on here somewhere.

Here's a link to a discussion about it.

Depending on what car it is, it could be the speed sensor on the diff.

It sounds more like the old cracked soldered joints problem on the rear of the speedo circuit board...the are a few threads on this problem on the forum (and a site somewhere on the net!) . It does mean removing the speedo from the dash but a quick fix with a soldering iron...and it gives you the chance to replace any duff instrument bulbs too...

Just found it on a previous thread...

Its a C5 I think?

One of our C5s had this before the common fix of just replacing the stepper motor was widely known about. Don't even ask at Citroen how much a new speedo unit is! I managed to find a brand new full speedo unit sat on a shelf in a local French car parts place, for £70!

However, yes, it will probably be the stepper motor, which is available from ebay and is not a difficult job to replace.

Just read this thread. Happy? coincidence.

The speedo on my C5 is also playing up. When I start off it doesn't work, then sometimes after 5 or 10 mins it will start to work. When it starts to work, sometimes it under-reads and then it will 'wake up' properly and read the correct speed. If the engine is turned off, even for 10 minutes, the whole problem begins again.

But the mile readers (odometers) are working fine, even when the speedo needle isn't doing anything.

Is this likely to be cracked solder joints on the back of the unit or the stepper motor?

Help please.

I'd guess stepper motor, it's plastic, with moving parts and much more delicate that a circuit board.

Hi begins, You don't say which car you are asking about. If its an S2 Xantia Have a look at your speedo contacts before trying stepper motors.. an easy fix if that's the problem.
Here's a link to both S2 and S1 speedo fixes
