Hand brake cables FYI

Post by KennyW »

Hi All,

Fitted 2 new hand brake cables today 1 1/2 hrs job total.

The bol was accurate in its description of removal and fitting, the only pain was feeding the O/S cable through the eyes above the steering rack.

It also explains the poor handbrake results at the MOT. The cables were badly affected by rust due to wear and not moving very well in their sheaths.

Well done, having done it now myself its not as bad as it looks. :)

For me the biggest challenge was sourcing the correct handbrake cables (!!) and getting the balancer box off and back on again, also necessitating removing the heat shield above the cat - not easy on a V6 with its huge cat...some "reshaping" of the heat shield was necessary to get it off and back on again.

Where did you get your cables from, and which Xantia did you do the job on ?

i dont know about on a V6 but other XANTS i have fitted cables on i just gently bend the heat shield away enough to get at the balance box, but also never had to remove the balance box at all,

you just need to put your finger through the hole in the side of the box, and unhook the cable with your finger

Tried that, but the cat on the V6 is too big so you can't bend the heat shield away enough to get at the two mounting bolts. One of the mounting bolts also holds the support bracket for the corner of the heat shield, that bracket makes it almost impossible to get a spanner on the nut... I don't know what they were thinking when they designed it.

Also as far as I can remember there were no finger holes in the side of the box. Unbolting the box was the only way I could get access. Maybe its different on other Xantias...(I never had to touch the handbrake cables on my last Xantia)

Simon,

I got my cables from SRS in Leith but they are a Glasgow firm with 3 places in Glasgow area.

They were Quinton Hazel make and the correct length.

Here's a link to QH site worth a check.

Yes, it's less of a cat and more of a tiger really...

I'm looking to need to do this job on the XM at some point. Easy or is it a normal XM complete 'mare of a job?
