Good result, and the car didn't let you down miles from home.

Were you able to find where the major problem was? Probably where the main cable is crimped within the battery connector? You'd have to cut it open with a hacksaw to investigate

well all 4 cables (3 going into fusebox and the starter) were all melted together in the top of the cable tidy stuff, couldnt even separate them, the end going in the crimp looks well toasty now i can actually see it properly, i'll take it apart at some point but at minute other things are taking the time up,

Hi, late post---!! On Nov 8 2012, Lurchy asked for size of battery starter cable. Having read all posts and sticky, no-one appears to have answered this question! Examining mine (HDI 110) yes it has melted the plastic insulation and has oxidised very badly, so with car off road undergoing various work, would like to make/purchase a new cable. Anyone know the csa or current rating?
Fitting a slightly larger one to my Renault 20 many, many years ago made an astonishing difference to the cranking speed although the original looked ok. (I just happened to have a spare piece of cable!)

i brought my leads from halfords (suprisingly cheap), just make sure you get the right lengths, they come with a ring at the end so you'll need a new battery terminal as well, i seem to remember 3 shorter leads for fuseboxes and a longer lead or was it 2 for the altinator and starter,

this is the longer one i think but check before you buy as its been a while since i did it to mine http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_255205" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

lurchy,
Thanks for the reply. I will remove it completely and measure it twice! Which type of terminals did you use?

personally i used one of these ones but theres quite a choice, i only used one of these as it has plenty of bolts on it to put the cables on, i used the bottom 2 where the cable should go in for all the battery leads and the 2 on the sides are there for other things ive wired, such as headlight mod and drl's

Lurchy, Thank you for the timely response! Wow that's some terminal - haven't seen one like that before (maybe I should get out more?).Well that seems to be the way to go. Did you solder the cable ends before installing the clamp? Regards, H
