Xantia Running Temps

Post by melkig » 16 Oct 2012, 17:10

Hi all,

My 1997 1.9TD varies in running temps from 75 though to 83 degrees depending on load etc. What do other people see with the XUD? Is it time to update the thermostat before winter kicks in and it struggles to get above 50 :) Temps do rise fairly quickly but just bounce around a little bit

Sounds like the thermostat is either not closing fully or is jammed open, so yes, probably time to do the thermostat before winter fully sets in. :)

Normal temperatures would be a steady 85-90 regardless of load once it initially warms up.

Defo the 'stat stuck (partly) open. I reckon that thermostats need changing every 5 years or so - the green Xantia is about due and showing signs that it doesn't open fully any more.

Thermostats mostly fail gradually in my experience though they may get to a point where they abruptly give up after shows increasing signs of impending failure. Bi-metal 'stats seem to mostly fail open. Wax 'stats mostly fail shut (as the wax escapes from the capsule when the seal fails).

To answer the original question:
What do other people see with the XUD?
Fitted a new thermostat shortly after I bought the car (95/96 1.9 estate sx) in April 2007 because it got hot and bothered if asked to do a constant 3000rpm on a motorway. Since then it warms up quickly to a whisker under 80 and stays between there and 85, regardless of load/speed/weather.

Recently, when pushed hard up a long hill the temperature rose to over 90 (despite the fans running) before I noticed and backed-off - time for a new thermostat.

I agree on 80C for a proper stable temperature, my car is an HDI but running temp should be similar.
My car had no thermostat (used in Portugal) when I bought it and never got above 40 unless high summer, these engines run cool.
I fitted a new thermostat and now only goes just above 80 if very hot outside and driving with A/C on othewise 80C on the nose.

I agree that changing the thermostat at the first sign of slipping from normal temp is a good idea. Never thought about it before but having experienced it I will do it in future as very little cost for such an important item.
