C5 dash lighting

Post by eddyc »

Hi just wondering how easy if at all possible it is to replace the bulbs inbehind the speedo and rev counter as they aren't working, the bulbs behind the center console ain't working either, I think I remember being told that it's leds that light the dash if so will that mean replacing the whole clock assembly and if so will any do or does it have to be one with similar or less miles.

Thanks in advance its a 51 plate 2ltr hdi lx model with 140k miles so I don't want to spend a fortune on it

On a Xantia, the common cause for all the dash/panel lamps not working is that the driver's knee has nudged the dashboard's dimmer control, which is down by the right knee, below the steering wheel. Does the C5 have something similar? Odd that the speedo & tacho bulbs have all stopped working.

On the C5, pushing the right side button of the instrument panel adjusts the dash lighting.

Not sure about the base model but on mine I am sure if you keep the one of the buttons pressed in it cycles through stages of brightness.

I think to get the clocks out you have to lever from the bottom to release the clips, same for the centre top clocks.

I've tried the button but it only affects the 3 that the lights seem to work on, I don't want to have to strip it all down only to find its leds not bulbs incase I can't get it back together right lol I've had it out of the dash but can't see any bulbs so I thought I'd ask on here b4 going any further.

Good and bad news. Yes, the C5 1 panel lighting is mainly LED (but not all. Some switches have their own bulbs). That's the bad news. I did for a minute think you'd nudged the "Dark" setting. The lh button, as you say, press and hold and it steps from dim to bright and back to dim again. If you give it a quick push it brings in the "Dark" setting, i.e. all lights go off except for the speedo. (press again and they all come back on. or if you put on handbrake, adjust temp etc. the appropriate). Yon can check as the message/radio binacle also goes dark. (that is dark NOT blank so check at night)

Good news, if some are working is it may just be a copper track that is cracked so with a multimeter you may be able to find and bridge over with a short wire (scratch off the plastic protective film on the strips).

If it comes to the worst there are loads of second hand panels on ebay or a scrappy.

Removal is quite easy, you don't even need a screwdriver.

Extend the steeringwheel fully out and down.
Using two blunt levers (cycle tyre levers or handles of teaspoons), press down and release the two clips you can just see below the binacle, it should then hinge out at the bottom and upward off the top hooks and lift out. Remove the multiplugs and Bob's yer uncle.

Dependent on skills you can the look for breaks, test the LEDs or replace the panel at worst.
(Citroen say you cannot replace individual LEDs...but that I just see as a challenge)

If you swap the whole panel, the milage will add the lowest to the highest.. so you will end up with milage that is way above the cars actual milage....

Yes, it will add the two mileages together if you replace the binnacle. Its a security feature to stop people just swapping them over to show a lower mileage.

So is it legal then to clock the car back to the original milage and is it easy to do the car I can get a a 2nd hand one but it's got 200k miles on it so that would leave the milage reading over 340k miles seriously devaluing the car
