BRAKE REWIND KIT

Post by Jeff »

Anyone have one of these - for winding caliper pistons in and out?

Considering buying a kit as over the years I will get use out of it but wondering if worth buying?

Currently have a C5 and my mates about to do his brakes on a Ford Galaxy which also wind in and out.

Thanks

Jeff

I only used one probably half a dozen times and just borrowed it from another garage at that time.

Previously I've carefully used a gclamp and a large flat bar  (yes I know) but with care and fingers well clear the same results can be obtained, albeit a bit slower.

It is worth buying one, I would of if I had a need to without a doubt but I did not do a lot of brake work anyway...

Carefull with C5 front wind in calipers...

One side winds INWARDS clockwise, the other winds in ANTI CLOCKWISE and I cant remember which side goes which way, but you soon know when you turn the wrong way, the piston ALMOST comes out rather quickly.... Dont be caught out like I nearly was..

As for winding in on Citroens, I use a 19mm socket on a ratchet and it works a BREEZE!!! No need to waste money on kits when a bit of home "application" works a treat.

No idea what the VW setup is for winding the pistons back in..

The Xantia front Caliper is hollow with a centre protusion spigot... It just so happens a 19mm socket grips it!

Ive got a video of me dooing it somewhere... I thought the C5 was the same, it was a while since I did some. But I certainly remember the caliper piston winding direction!!!

On the C5 the near side screws in Clockwise and off side screws in Anti clockwise.
The piston on the C5 is different but a large castellated socket would probably work. (job for the angle grinder...)

Just bought a set from same seller as imperial21 got his.

£15.44 is cheap.

Thanks to all for the helpful advice.

I'll have to give that tip a go next time. I've always used a file to push and twist the calliper. I need a couple of breaks though as it's fairly knackering!
