Xantia Engine
I have a 1.9TD xantia L reg. The engine has seized on it. How much should I expect to pay for a second hand one and then having it fitted. Is it worth the money to get replaced ?

2nd hand engine probably about £200 - £300 - condition will be unknown. It's about 8-10 hours work to change it, so that's at least £160 even at a cheapo place. Add in a new clutch (£100 parts, minimal fitting if the engine is out), timing belt, various fluids (say £50) and the Government's share, and you're going to be lucky to get any change out of £700. About the cost of a reasonable L reg replacement. £1500 will buy you a N plater TD with only 70k miles. I'd scrap it.

But £700 will only get another of the same age, which may last 10 years, or may go the same way within a week.
It is always a gamble, at least by replacing the engine he knows what other faults the car does/does not have.
Although if the engine is siezed it does suggest that maintenance has been a little lax at some time.
