Very good news, I can imagine the bill was a little eye watering  8-[

When i got the clutch done on mine it was the same, a totally different and better feeling clutch. Though for the first few drives I had to remind myself that it has a new clutch, the bite was much lower

Our 2.0HDi 138 estate will need a DMF & clutch soon, it is making awful noises when the clutch is pressed. It doesn't sound like a release bearing, it sounds very rough and can be felt through the pedal, but it might well be. There is some vibration sometimes when pulling away but otherwise the clutch operates perfectly. This noise is getting worse though. Its done 91,000 miles but has a hard life as it is always very heavily loaded.

Good stuff, I remember doing one on a 407 hdi, bit fiddly to say the least! Classic tell tale signs of a DMF failing is a chirping type noise when releasing the clutch in first gear. Those DMF's weigh an absolute ton!

my friends 1.6 HDI 307 the thrust bearing disintegrated as he pulled onto my workshop drive, with no reported noise, fault noticed before hand, it just exploded,

Chris you know the dealer sells a conversion kit just for the 2.0 HDI's to convert to a solid flywheel, someone told me the other day they bought one of these kits from the dealer for just over £200 quid, and this was cheaper than GSF were asking,

aparently they dont do one for the 1.6 HDI and the DMF from GSF was around £400 quid just for the flywheel

Far as I know Malcolm that is for the 110BHP 8V - there is no conversion kit for the 138BHP 16V unit (which uses a LUK self adjusting push clutch). It's not too bad - DMF and clutch can be had for around £400.... Fitting it is a bit of a git, but a walk in the park compared to your experience on the 1.6 110!!

My 406 'chirps' when I pull away, the pedal is also very high but it has done over 200k, I have done the last 20k and it doesn't seem to have got much worse. The only thing I do notice though is that there is some vibration when pulling from below 1500 rpm, I don't know whether that is a fault or normal, my XM will pull smoothly from tickover.

Does this mean the 110 in the 406 has DMF?

Yes Malcolm, unfortunately it is only for the 110 HDi 8v and not the 138 HDi 16v which two of our C5s are.

However, our 2002 110 C5 HDi does have a solid flywheel conversion. It was fitted at 60K when its original DMF failed. The cars has now covered over 145K and its still fine, just goes to show you! Progress hey! So for the 110 8v, I would recommend fitting a solid conversion.

As a side note to that, I have heard of a lot of these solid flywheel conversions ruining the engine, with a cracked crank due to the increased vibrations. I take this as the 110HDi 8v to be fine with a solid flywheel, as it was designed from the off to have a solid flywheel (Xantia). However the laster 16v units I would not risk putting in a solid flywheel, they dont make one anyway.

My C5 138 16v had its clutch replaced at 29,000 miles due to a failed DMF. However this was showing signs of failure when I bought the car with 11K miles. Oddly this fault went totally without trace for a year and 18K miles until it failed and I had to replace it. The clutch friction plate looked new and compared to the new one which went in there was little difference - so I can not say this was down to clutch abuse. The garage who fitted it seemed to think it was compnent failure, rather than wear and tear.

I would like to know why some DMFs can last well over 100K and others struggle to get to 30K. Obviously where the car is driven and how sympathetic the driver is with the clutch counts, but clutch wear doesnt seem to be too related :?

Mine cost me just a shade over £700 for the bits (all genuine Citroen) and for it to be fitted.
