Still Smokey

Post by Alec B »

Hi all, we have had a problem with hesitation at low revs and excessive exhaust smoke. Anyway the hesitation has finally been resolved, it was a valve/sensor on the anti-pollution system which has been cured. We still have a problem with the smoking. Before I start throwing more money at it (and we have no error codes on a Lexia) could anyone suggest the most likely cause, EGR? Once this is fixed the only other problem are the rear arm bearings that we hope to sort soon. Then all will be sorted for now :-D

Depends how smokey ?, these dpf cars usually dont smoke at all, unless the turbo fails. It is very easy to take off the turbo pipe, and wiggle the impeller of the Turbo to check for free play, there should be very little up and down movement.

It has light amounts pulling away when I have followed my wife as she pulls away from junctions etc. But doing an overtake it smokes like a goodun, probably enough to fail an mot. I will check the turbo in a mo before I go out, and update post later.

Turbo has no play but is stiff to turn, is this correct? Also quite a bit of oil in air filter hose as it joins the turbo, again is this correct?

When I had to remove the turbo on my turbo diesel BX many years ago, the impellor seemed to spin without much effort, so your description of yours being "stiff" sounds suspect (IMHO).

Both my BX and Xantia have oil in the air feed hose to the turbo. I assume it's par for the course.

Cheers for that. It seems ok to drive as it seems to have plenty of power, like you say though it does seem a bit suspect,
