Ah, progress, of a sort. Would explain the difficult starting.

By shims, I'm assuming you mean for the valve clearances? It's quite possible someone on here (FCF) will have some floating around, so worth considering putting an entry under WANTED, but better wait till your mechanic knows what thicknesses he needs. Also depends how much Citroen want. Possible that you may be able to re-use one or two shims by moving them to different valves. It may be hard work, but I've reduced the odd shim on my 1.9 XUD engine by rubbing them on 1000 grade Wet & Dry, with white spirit, but it's tedious and only really worth it if you're only looking for 1-2 thou.

Hope this sorts the starting :)

Is there anything I should know about the best way to get them quickly, or are they something that take ages to get. Citroen part only????
service items if not on stock, available next day..Citroen or pug parts will do.... easy peasy on them, no need to take the cam out.. a c spanner or similar should do it.

Mines just started to do this as of yesterday although I've identied the cause as one completely dead heater plug and the leakoff pipework is slightly damp around injector 3 as well. *parts ordered*

Does still cold start although after an argument, moreso as I don't have a fast idle cable (no where to fit one! thermostat housing is not drilled) so it will cut out if left to attempt to idle at 800 rpm. Little choice but to use it but plugs will be here tomorrow so I'll pop them in when they arrive.

How is your progress going ? Have you had the clearances reset yet ? :)

Just picked it up this morning. He said it started on the button, but it isn't that cold really. Will check it out over the weekend.
2 shims were replaced.

Also had a rocker cover leak seen to while it was easy.

With this fix, new battery and new glowplugs, hopefully I will have no winter worries!

Fingers crossed for you :)

Did he tell you what the valve clearances were before he adjusted them? Or how far out they were?

I can't remember the units, but if one shim was marked as 43.5 then I think he was saying it was 40.5
I wasn't really following the technical aspects TBH.

Heavy enough frost this morning. Had to clear the windscreen with some warm water.
The car started pretty much straight away, after 1 go of the glow plugs, so it is cured!!

There is one different however.

Before being fixed, the car might take an age to start, but once it did the idle was a smooth as a baby's bottom. Since the cold weather it splutters a bit after starting. Not going to worry about it too much just yet!

Thanks for all the tips and advice. Another AX kept on the road.

Excellent.

Is the idle speed higher when its stone cold ? , on your's it should idle a little bit higher than normal when its cold for a few minutes until the waxstat in the thermostat housing releases the fast idle cable, although it will work without it it will just attempt to idle a bit slow for a couple of minutes.
