C5 Air Bag Light??

Post by corsehf »

Hello Guys
Have had an issue with my Air Bag warning light now for quite a while so had a quiet weekend a while back and set to for a look but to no avail :( .
Passenger footwell connectors have been bypassed, removed both front seats and checked all connectors there but all look ok. Also tried to remove the steering wheel as mentioned on here but could not get past the black plastic part as i could not work out how it comes off without breaking it.
Put it all back together, the Air Bag light is still on BUT i now have the poxy ESP light on #-o .
Any ideas??
Andy

Most cars have the Airbag Control Module situated infront of the gear stick under the ashtray or facia, could be the seat belt pretentioners plugs that plug into the ACM need a wiggle! If all else fails change the ACM, picked one up for a mate's 306 a while ago after checking everything, swapped out the ACM for a tenner from the scrappy, fixed no airbag light!

Anyone have any further info on this?? - especially on how to remove the black plastic centre from beneath the air bag on the steering wheel? - as i'm sure i have read on this forum somewhere that that could be a problem area.

If you mean the rotating part you need to remove the complete switch and depress the plastic clips inside. I doubt though that you can do anything with it.

I have one stripped down here on my table, I'd post some pictures but at the moment my camera has been loaned to a friend to photograph a Christening.

Yes I do and I thought I had read on this forum that there is something that snaps or wears with age and can be fixed? - I need to do another search

Inside that spool is a flat ribbon cable similar to the sort you find in computers, it is wound up like a clock spring hence the often used description, it's intended to make the connection between the bag and the car loom and really shouldn't break unless at some time it's been maladjusted.

You may be able to check the continuity through there with a meter without taking the switch off, to do that take off the plastic cowl under the switch and disconnect the plug in connectors to the left and right at the back of the switch, the airbag wire with the blue end goes through the clockspring to the left and the one with the green connector goes to the right hand one.
The grey one goes to the printed circuit board inside the switch. I don't recommend that you take the switch to bits unless you are very deft with your fingers and have a spare pair of hands to get the intricate bits back in.

It's not too bad Boris, there are no screws or glued together bits it all clicks apart and back together, the biggest problem is getting all the switch contacts lined up and held while you click the top back on, you need a jig or more than one pair of hands.
