So, I gets the car to the garage, told it will be four hours, so off I trot around the town, miles from home. Three hours later, the moby rings. Garage says they have been sent the wrong part.

Can you believe this? Car's in pieces, and no sign of when it will be fixed.

Long walk to the railway station, even longer to catch trains back home.

Talk about pissed off.

FInally resolved.

Got the car back this pm :)

Garage showed me the original piece and it had about four big dents in it. By the way it was described to me, it sounds like it's right in the firing line for crap off the road. There was also what appeared to be the very disintegrated remains of two birds stuck to the rear of it!

Garage guy was recommending to use the aircon each day the car is used, to somehow avoid it packing up prematurely.

Honest John in Daily Telegraph advocates using it once a week (IIRC), so that the gas, which includes a lubricant, is pumped around. The lubricant helps stop the seals drying out. Maybe this is what your garage guy was referring to?

It (AC) uses bugger-all horsepower. My unscientific tests with the Xantia break (supported by result from equally unscientific tests by another bloke in a C5 break) show more fuel usage at freeway speed driving with the front windows down, than with the glass right up and AC on.

Alternators load up the motor more than a SDV716, from what I can tell - at idle, count the steps open on the stepper motor as you load up the electrics. So if you want to save fuel, never use lights, radio, heated seats, the rear demister or wipers...

Your manual tells you to use it once a month during winter.
Mine are all auto so it's only off if I tell it or the temp is 4 degrees or less

I fell asleep reading the relevant pages in the manual last night!

Yes, anyway, I think I know what I need to do now.

Really happy to get the car back, that's for sure.
