Your not kidding there, todays cars are just throw away items. Someone I was talking to today has been told his owned since new 2002 VW Polo is a write off due to it needing a new throttle body, which VW want over £500 for. Then there is the fitting labour and a few other bits and pieces it needs. They have told him to scrap the car!

There is a cheap Xantia on autotrader, its a HDi Exclusive. It seems to have met with a good few stationary objects but it might be a bargain.

Bizarrely, neither of my two ZXs had any rot at all on them. I had them in 2005 and 6, one was a K-plate TD Aura and the other an M-Plate TD Aura.

Faults - In the K plater, the heater controller went faulty in one of them. Then the garage fitted a wrong strut and balljoint, and made a balls of fixing something on the rear end. I gave up on that one. I did do 20k in it in six months.

The M-Plater had some bizarre fault with the stop solenoid where it would refuse to start when hot. Or cold. If one belted it, or poured cold water over it when it was hot it started. I was on my way up North to get the pump sorted when the cambelt let go at speed on the M6 near Sandbach services.

If it's that blue one with the banged in wing for £550, that's the one I wanted. Must have been good since it sold yesterday. :(

That's an odd fault there Mike. My ZX hardly had any rust on it until the last 2 years I owned it, then it suddenly just took off.

It must be certain models/years of Zx's with rust issues , the only bit on mine is where the car has been jacked up on the jacking points and the paint/coating has rubbed away and it is very minor at that , also a couple of very small areas where there is a slight delamination of the rubber underseal but again very minor , I'll be posting pics up in my Zx16v thread in blogs/galleries soon .

And you weren't wrong there! Tuesday night an ad went up for a black Exclusive HDi for £500 taxed and ticketed. Just driven it home, it was the bargain of the century.

Alex's new motah made me decidedly jealous (although it needs spheres badly!). Old faithful is showing her age now and a fair few things no longer work, and with tin worm eating the rear sills and a clutch that's started juddering I'm thinking of casting around for another one!

Curious as to why a sunroof makes a difference, but I live to learn! When I say "old faithful", I really mean it. I've driven this car daily since I bought it in 2000 with 21k on the clock. Figured it wasn't unreasonable to expect a bit of rot by now. It doesn't look too bad and can be fixed with relative ease. I've enlisted the help of a mate from work to do the welding but I'm scared of the cost of doing the clutch (that has over 200k on it - don't ask why it needed changing at 45k....).

Pictures coming shortly (when my brother brings his phone back from the pub). Feels like it needs corner spheres and the front accumulator ticks too much, but other than that it's a tidy specimen, not a speck of rust that I can see and everything works.

Edit: I have what appears to be the last 10 years or so in service history, and it looks like none of the spheres have ever been replaced/regassed. What are the odds that they are the original ones?

Absolutely. I thoroughly enjoyed the privilege of driving Rattiva II for 800 miles. Get one - enjoy :-D

Old V6 still does it though
