Think of a sphere/accumulator as having a balloon filled with nitrogen gas at about 65bar (I think) inside it. When the pump stops pumping the balloon is trying to force the LHM out of the sphere at 65bar. This is what makes the brakes for example still work with the engine stopped. I don't see how a faulty regulator could damage an accumulator, unless it was allowing the pressure to be high enough to rupture the balloon, I would expect other things to fail if this was the case.
