The Dreaded Tin Worm....

Post by Chlorate »

So my MOT failed nicely today. Mostly on welding, but a couple of other issues with the brakes that I can do myself.

Lots of work need to be done on both sills, to the point where it's almost worth replacing the whole thing (according to the tester), a couple of bits on the floor pan, and potentially a look at the strut tops.

Does anyone know any decent welders in the Ashford (Kent) area that won't charge an arm and a leg?

I'm hoping it can be rescued :(

Sounds fairly terminal, a pair of new cills fitted has got to be a fair wack of money plus the other welding and if the car has got to that stage its not going to go much longer, maybe its time to find a New friend?

I am beginning to suspect as much. When asked for an estimate, the tester shrugged and said they wouldn't take it on "but you're looking at about £600 there"....I only paid £500 for it :(

I've always liked Xantiae John, what sort of price are you looking for? I could be interested.

Not the best news, but then it is 17 years old!

There are 2 things about tin worm:

1. It's always worse than it first looks after you have cleaned it out
2. Once it starts in earnest (as yours has done) it tends to be rampant and you will always be chasing it

If you have a welder then it would worth patching up the one you've got and looking for another, but if you have to pay someone else, then it's always going to be prohibitive.
