Xant TD -Glow Plug Light stays on - hot start

Post by ecohouse1 »

Hi Folks

Notice that in my XUD1.9 TD that the GP light stays on a while on preheat long term on a hot start, but goes out when I start. Not every time but some times. Usually its only on a second or 2 as the engine is already warm!

Cold start normal. Do you think my GP relay is getting decrpit?

Cheers

Alan

Could be, but as long as it goes out eventually I wouldn't worry about it.

It could be the temp sensor (I'm assuming its using the coolant sensor and not an ambient air temp sensor in the relay / module) or the module itself.

As long as it goes out when you start that's OK. Note that on some the plugs will still be kept energised even if the light is off for up to a couple of minutes (this is normal, its post heating (no light) but should only do that when cold)

Less common but sometimes with some of them it can have odd effects if you have a plug down although I'm not 100% if that's a PSA concern or not. You'd know if you had a plug down though from the initial misfire when cold I'd guess.

Mine always comes on, although depending on the temp its not long. I know the later N/A XUD's they hardly ever came on when hot but the turbo one's did, probably the tiny bit of extra preheating to compensate for the slightly lower compression with the turbo engine.

Personally if its only for 2 or 3 seconds with a hot engine I'd not be concerned at this stage.

EDIT.. And the 205TD I had, that was *always* about 6 maybe 8 seconds regardless as it was a basic timed relay no sensor. Although I never waited when the engine was hot, it always started immediately as the slightest turn of the key when hot.
