Yes, glow plug relay, unless it has a permanant supply from the ignition switch.

When you've replaced the relay and plugs, carefully attach a test lead to one of the glow plugs or its supply wire and watch its operation.

They will be on with the warning light and a short time after, in some cases even with the engine running (post heating) but they should not be supplied for too long.

the cable linking the glow plugs is about £5.00 from the dealer

here is price and part No.

Part Number Description Quantity Price excl. VAT Price incl. VAT Total incl. VAT Selection
0000596984 GLOW PLUG CABLE 31.81 GBP 38.17 GBP 38.17 GBP

the price of the correct one for your car i would buy two of the ones below for an XUD engine if the spacing between the plugs are the same,
then use one complete and cut the extra tolink from the end plug the the timer box from the second new cable second one

I don't know for sure how long the post-heating time is but 2 minutes might be correct.
If it's the same previously melted cable overheating then I would think it will need replaced.

You could double up on the wires, fit new ones and leave the others on, that should help the problem.
