It was a belt and double braces job.
Despite assurances I was unconvinced that the copper ring would do the job without any assistance, so I utilised the good old gas spec thread sealing tape, the rubber ring in what was left of the groove, and the copper ring and tightened the sphere up as hard as I could.
I did get much farther with the tightening than when I tried it with the copper ring alone. If I had managed the same degree of tightening maybe the copper ring would have been all that was required. Now that its sealed I am not going to undo it just for scientific curiosity
Did half think about using Loctite 542 if I could get hold of it (about £8 for 10 ml on the net), specific thread sealing as opposed to thread locking properties for hydraulic unions up to 10,000psi.
