brake leak?

Post by john »

im convinced i've got a fluid lead (keep needing to top up!)

im going to check the calipers/drums first, does the pipes go straight to the master cylinder or does it goes elsewhere first then to the ms?

so my next question is do you need to buy the spring kit or can you just reuse what you have?

I'd just clean the springs etc up and refit them. New brake shoes of course, and either new seals in the wheel cylinder (if available), or a new cylinder.

In the old days, decades ago, when I ran British Leyland cars, seals were available for wheel cylinders, but didn't always cure the leak, depending I guess on the condition of the inside of the cylinder itself.

If the bleed nipple won't undo, to allow you to bleed the brakes, then you'll have to fit a new cylinder anyway.

it easier to just fit new cylinders straight away as they are usually cheap enough these days,

new shoes obviously and yes re/use the old springs,

at least the shoes are at the end of there life so would need replacing anyhow

Is the other cylinder seized John ? Maybe that's why the shoes are not as worn.

Don't forget to put the drum loosely on the leaky side before checking the other one for "stuckness". Otherwise you'll be putting up a "Help, these bits just popped out!" thread...

naaa
all you need to do to check for cylinder stuckness is with two large screw drivers one each side of the top of both shoes and lever one way the the other

somoene give that man a cigar! the "good" side is indeed seized, so ive been driving using only the front brakes

managed to get side with the leaky piston sorted, so now need to buy another piston (or a repair kit preferably) as the pipe seems to be seized.
