Not sure if a common place to rust but sure is not good place to rust, would mean a complete rear quarter panel repaint.

This has been appearing on a few Xantias recently. Does your car have a sunroof?

Saw a Xantia in France last week which had horrendous rust in that area.

Most if not all of the other cars that people have seen with rust there haven't had sunroofs. That must be around 10 cases of rusty rear wing without sunroof now and near enough no case with sunroofs.

That's right at the top of your wheelarch opening. Bit of a mud trap. Possibly the sunroof drain tubes wash it a little.

It's because theres an open space at the back of the n/s rear wheel arch, up to the boot vent.
Spray gets up there and it starts to rust.
Juliet has it and when it stops raining for long enough I'll get it sorted.

It's rusting from the inside out so the actual area is most likely much larger than the bubbles.
If you push around them you will probably feel the soft area.
Juliet actually has a hole.
I'll probably have to grind back the area, cut out the hole, treat the inside with some anti rust stuff and use mesh and resin to build it back up. Never done it before.
Removing the boot lining will give access to the vent so I can clean that up too and spray the inside of the rear quarter.

Strange place for rust. Is it painted?

Usually the rusty place is just before the stop lights. Depending on the country this can lead to:

But the truth lays inside :)
http://postimage.org/image/gery8t823/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://postimage.org/image/4qxwe9ix7/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://postimage.org/image/hwdekdcsr/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It is all because of uncovered hole just behind the rear left wheel. All the mud and water go in there and stick to the metal...

Thanks for posting those pictures PIT. Just goes to show the extent of the problem...

Is the back of that panel easily accessible to give it preventative treatment?

Do they use salt on the roads for de-icing in winter in your country as they do here in the UK?

As this rust is so variable in the cars it crops up in I wonder if it was a paint quality control issue at the factory?

As we know the PSA cars usually have good treatment against rust. But this place is closed. The mud goes there, sticks to the metal and stays there. Wet and dirty. So even this treatment can not resist. (Imagine if this was an Opel :D)
So to prevent this it is good to wash this place every time you wash your car. Spray water inside this hole to clean the dirt. If it is too much, you can remove the most with a hand.
Another good thing is to put something to cover this hole, so no mud goes inside. But do not cover it permanently, because this hole is for bumper removal :)

These pictures are from my old Xantia '94. It came in 2006 from Austria and there is a lot of rust on the screws and hydraulic pipes...
Here in Bulgaria, they also use salt and other de-icing sh*ts on the road ... Combined with our very dirty roads with a lots of dust you have the perfect mixture to stick somewhere on your car and begin to rust...

Ive not seen many UK Xantias going in that area, they usually go in the rear door shut at the bottom of the wing, though yours looks quite solid there.

Yes, this is another rusty place.
My '98 ACTIVA was rusty behind both left and right doors.
For the other place maybe because of the clearer roads, when it is only water it drains from there. On a dirty muddy road it sticks to the metal...
