What a sad end to a desperately frustrating saga! I just hope I'm luckier with mine. The independent garage which has serviced my Peugeot 504 for years, and looked after my Xantia well, is happy to look after my C5. They have two other customers who own them.

As for “it is not as though they can see any worthwhile repeat orders on the back of fixing this one, so really why should they bother,” - they should bother because their reputation is at stake. I was in a Xsara taxi yesterday, and the driver/owner said they make good taxis because they're reliable, with “bullet-proof” engines. So much depends on reputation in a market that's overcrowded.

I like my C5 so much that I wouldn't mind paying £1,000 to have a complicated fault fixed; so far as I can tell, it's the only affordable modern car that makes a serious attempt at providing a smooth ride. I say that after travelling in an Audi A4 quite a few times, and occasional journeys in Mondeo, Picasso, Zafira, and Mercedes C220.

A friend who's a motoring journalist may have reviewed the Chrysler 300c – when I've posted this I'll email him and ask. If he has, he'd be a good person to comment, as he's an enthusiast for older cars, from the era when comfort was a priority.

Here's a comment from my motoring journalist friend:

“Please excuse brief reply as I am on the Isle of Wight until tomorrow evening, with limited internet access.

The Chrysler 300C... One of my favourite modern cars. We hired a V6 petrol powered version in the U.S.A. in 2005 and covered 2,500 comfortable, happy miles in it, within a fortnight. I have also driven a diesel version for a week in the U.K. (about four years ago), and again was hugely impressed. It is rather wide for U.K. roads, and especially U.K. parking spaces. We parked it in a multi-storey car park and there was insufficient width to open the doors...

Otherwise most enjoyable, and with an accommodating ride quality; supple but not too soft”.

I hope this helps.

Thank You LD, we shall bear that in mind.
My brother who is a mechanic hundreds of miles away has worked on on a 52 plate one and found the underneath rotten. Could have been one off.

And then again.......... One thing that has always impressed me with PSA cars since about 1990 is just how good the corrosion protection is, I rarely see any PSA car that appears to be suffering from corrosion and I think it would be fair to say that the vast majority of cars get scrapped for mechanical, reasons rather than for body corrosion failures, I am not so sure that this applies to cars from American owned companies seems to me that I do see GM cars and Fords suffering more in this respect. Might be good idea to look at the manufacturers bodywork warranty periods would give some idea of just how confident they are.

Mind don't think that what happened with the C5 couldn't happen to a car from another manufacturer, at that level they are all very similar, they all work the same way and I suspect that all garages have the same problem of finding people with the required skills to fix the more complicated problems.

But would the dealer and manufacturer treat me any better?
Even when I have had new Citroen's with faults the dealer cannot fix the customer service from both has been awful.
Citroen C5 appears to be the most comfortable car we can afford. We are thinking of another but from a dealer so at least the warranty is Citroen but I can't see us being treated better in reality and they are £££s more.

The Citroen dealer in Sheffield is very poor , I wouldn't like to think I had to take anything there .

The C5 has been looked at by a Specialist on behalf of the garage I bought the car from. He found evidence of water ingress into the main ecu straight away.
The car is still at a Citroen Dealer, as Citroen are supposedly still involved with trying to resolve the situation. I think the garage that supplied the car can't move it as they would have to start again with Citroen.

Fixed!
Main Engine ECU replaced and its been running for 1000 miles not faults.
Shame Arnold Clark and Citroen couldn't diagnose the fault that an independent specialist did quickly.
Also shame the car is not mine anymore.
