Glow plug failure

Post by rabenson »

My 1.9d ZX has recently been a bit reluctant to start. Totally out of character but it did the same about a year ago. That time I took it in to my local cit specialist who diagnosed three failed heater plugs. These he replaced with BERU's best and all was fine.
This time I took it in to the same Cit specialist who again diagnosed three failed heater plugs. He showed me them and there was no obvious visible damage. Anyone got any ideas what could cause three quality glowplugs to fail in a year??

I assume all your plugs were replaced last year and that you haven't got a miracle plug that outlives all the others, and that also the correct plugs were used.
In which case I suggest that you check the operation of the control unit/timer as it would seem likely that the plugs are staying on longer than they should.
haynes original ZX book (1994) states that they ALL use the same plug as a BX and gives the champion ref. Haynes diesel engine service guide gives a different plug for the TD. My understanding is that the TD's have a timer that keeps the plugs of for 45 secs after the engine starts and probably the ordinary diesel doesn't.
Dont think it makes much difference to the starting - my TD BX doesn't start quite as readily as my wife's ZX D (likes to be heated a fraction longer - but always starts first heat and first time) but I've always thought the aditional 133,000 miles might have something to do with it.

No, it was only three that were replaced and they were replaced with the correct BERU plugs. The reason that I'm curious is that on my previous car pug 205d I replaced the plugs at around 100,000 miles and they were still going strong when I sold it at 197,000 miles. The ones that have just been replaced have only done about 20k....
strange.....
133,000 miles - just run in!!
PS I only sold the 205 because I ran out of nerve that it was getting perilously close to 200,000 miles but the chap I sold it to over a year ago is still dead chuffed with it and he has just fitted a tow bar so he can pull his trailer.....
