C5 80K DIY service

Post by GB »

I'm gearing up for my 05 C5 2.0HDi DPF 80K service soon - can the Citroen gurus please advise on a few items?

1. Transmission oil
Total BV 75W80 - is 2 litres enough (6sp manual)?

2. Eolys
The car has done 78K, and according to the service schedule it needs Eolys top up at 80K. I have a 1L bottle available (Eolys 176) - can I just add 1L for now or do I need to fully refill the additive tank? What's the additive tank capacity? Is ECU reset necessary?

3. Drop links
Are Lemforder the best OEM drop links (apart from genuine Citroen)? Any other recommended brands?

4. LDS fluid
I don't like the look of the current LDS and would like to drain it an replace - apparently I need a replacement clip for the reservoir pipe; is it some sort of a special Citroen clip, or can I improvise? How many litres of LDS are required?

5. Fuel filter
Bosch filter: check. 27mm socket: check. Unscrew the filter body: er, no go. Are they usually that hard to unscrew or is it just me?

6. Coolant antifreeze
According to Citroen the coolant is good for lifetime - is it really? If I was to change the coolant as well what type do I need? Should I just grab the Citroen one? How many litres are required?

Needless to say, apart from the above I'm also replacing the engine oil (Total Ineo ECS 5W30), oil/air/pollen filters, plus the drive belt.

I'll answer what i can for you.....

2. Eolys fluid needs to have a Lexia inform the system its been topped up, i'd fill it to the brim if i was gonna do it. Dunno what the tank capacity is though.

3. Lemforder are considered the ones to go for, pattern drop links fail too quickly.

4. Dunno about the clip, but buy the LDS from GSF, you won't find it cheaper anywhere, trust me i looked.

5. Fuel filter is a right PITA to undo, i had to borrow a friends fuel filter socket and put a rubber oil filter removal puller around the outside to get it undone.

6. Very sceptical of any "lifetime" claim on coolant/gearbox oil, i'd be inclined to change every 5 years, mine has the fluorescent orange longlife stuff in, a 50/50 mix would equate to approx 3 litres of antifreeze needed.

Point 6, fully agree with the post above. I recon three years is quite long enough.
I bought 3L of Citroen AntiGel antifreeze from our local Citroen dealer. Correct for the car according to them.
Green stuff.

It may be worth considering adding Forte Cooling System Conditioner and/or Radiator Stop Leak - which does more than stop leaks, Valeo insist on this when fitting a new matrix or the warrant is void.

Most users do the timing belt at 80,000 miles too.
The water pump is generally changed at the same time as they often fail soon after the timing belt has been renewed.

Still trying to determine how much transmission oil is required.

The facelift C5 (2005) 2.0HDi six speed manual transmission - that is the ML6C model, isn't it?

Haynes C5 BOL indicates either 1.9l (without cooling fins on gearbox) or 2.6l (with cooling fins).

But then I found this (c4/c5 mechanics handbook).

Between 2.4 and 2.7 litres?

How much transmission oil do I need to use then?

Since its a 2.0HDi 16v 138 engine you should ideally use Total ECS oil, if you don't already. Its the low sulphur stuff and was apparently designed for the 1.6 & 2.0 16v diesel engines.

Its what I use on every service and the one time our estate didn't get that oil, it was fairly often doing a DPF regeneration.

 I realise that but usually a 80k service also consists of an engine oil and filter change
