Height Corrector Diaphragms

Post by harryp »

Hi all,
I have noticed a minor leak/weep on the rear height corrector, so looks like a rebuild when I'm back from holiday :( . So diving into FCF have read carefully all the info I can get on rebuilding same. Thanks to all concerned for a truly encyclopaediac amount of info :-D. I would assume(?) that a diaphragm may be leaking as the unions are tight :?:. Question I have is; where do you obtain new diaphragms from? Just in case!!
Cheers, Harry

One of the most likely is:
Pleiades
Unit 12A Brookside Industrial Estate
Sawtry
PE28 5S
Tel 01487 831239

Very easy to find, just off the A1M between St. Neots and Peterborough.

Don't try to contact them on the internet, won't work, phone is the only way.

Myglaren - Many thanks for such a swift reply. I'm near Telford so contact will have to be by phone. Had a steering hyd pipe made by them - quick and very helpful!
I often wonder where we'd all be without the expert advice from this site! I'm one of the old school who repairs everything where possible rather than replace. I enjoy finding out how it all works as it is a far cry from coil springs. The usual manuals do not contain much tech info these days; probably health and safety issues. Would be impossible to re-bearing a trans-axle these days due to lack of info on preloads!, or is such info still available.....
Anyway, thanks again.
Harry

have you checked the short rubber connecting pipe that the plastic seepage return pipe plugs into, as this is the usual leak at the H/C's

Malcolm, Thanks for that - Yes, having spoken earlier to Pleiades! It is not leaking and looks sound. Lift the lower edge of the fwd diaphragm and that's where the leak is. Nipples are well and truly corroded so will wire brush and diesel or plus gas and hope it penetrates in a weeks time as on holiday - taking car so should be able to apply on a daily basis..... I am actually looking fwd to getting both overhauled as I long to see what the suspension is like afterwards, going on previous comments when finished! Wont be able to do anything till a week Monday - when of course it will rain?

it is possible to fit a new diaphragm in situe at the end/side without the ball/linkage,

this way you don't need to disconnect any pipes,

Malcolm,
Now there's an idea! I did wonder, but the leak is minute(at present), just the odd drip. Think that trying to completely overhaul it in situ would qualify me as a gynaecologist?

if you can access the side of the H/C without the linkage, you can pull the protective cap off, then under that you will find an 6mm nut remove this then carefully prize the diaphragm off of the edge of the H/C body,
now watch the order the steel dis inside the diaphragm, and spring come away,
fit new diaphragm then the dished steel disc on the out side of this,
then the 8mm nut but try and stop the linkage at the other end of the H/C moving/rotating

now re/fit the dust cover and bongo all fixed, that is if the leaking diaphragm is this one
