brake disc fitting

Post by john »

when fitting new discs - are you meant to push the piston all the way in on the calliper or just enough to get to the calliper back on? i have always put it back just enough but a mate says he goes all the way back.

is there a "correct" way?

Enough to get the calliper back on has always been enough for me.
It's only going to wind out to there anyway.

Two ways to look at winding it all the way in:

* full back will 'exercise' the piston and clean the circumference
* if the piston is burred over it could foul and jam

What car is this on anyway? Phone doesn't display signature if you listed it!

If you are replacing discs then really you should replace the pads too in which case the piston will need to go all the way back in to fit them.

i agree with mirafioriman above

also if this is fronts on a XANT/BX you MUST NOT just push the pistons back as you will damage the adjuster mechanism inside the caliper,

these pistons have to be wound back in

You don't have to wind them all the way back in to fit new pads, unless you have somehow found extra thick pads!

Do make sure you thoroughly clean out the old dust from the pad's socket before fitting new ones though.
