Pollen filters

Post by HDI »

When this recent hot spell started I noticed that the ventilation seemed a bit weak, my aircon is NF and I was cooking in traffic Q's !
This happened once before and it was a blocked pollen filter, strange I thought, I only replaced that recently. Pulled it out and it was caked, not as bad as when I first did it but quite bad. So I blew it off with compressed air, and Bob's your auntie and immediate vast improvement. Checked my records and it 2 years ago when I replaced it last time !! I was sure it was only last year ! Surprising how much muck they keep out of the cabin. It occured to me that when blocked or restricted it will cause the blower motor to work much harder, so something to consider. Of course, it could just be removed, not in my case though, I suffer from hayfever.
Now using '00 Xantia LX HDI, pov spec :(

Seem to be missed during servicing on all the cars I've bought. The one on the A Class looked like charcoal, that said to change it you had to remove the wipers and scuttle trim.... On the Prius it's open glovebox, slide off damper strut, unclip and remove filter. For a dashboard that clips together there's surprisingly few noises from it.

could just be removed
Preferably not, the filter keeps the evaporator clean.
With the aircon on, the evaporator is wet and the muck would stick to it.

They do seem to be a case of "out of sight, out of mind" , I seem to remember the later Mondeo were up under the dash (mind you so are the later Astra's)

Slightly more so on cars that don't have AC but still have a filter. Not that uncommon although the general owner consensus seemed to be "its not got air con! it does not have a filter" but there it was, caked to say the least. :D , 206's spring to mind here.

Pollen filter is one of the first things i do whenever i get a used car. This is what the filter looked like on my MKII Laguna....

Shocking to think that could end up inside the ventilation system were it not for the filter :o
