I think these are bonded in and correct fitment is a safety matter.
16 inches is a large crack - there are specialists who claim to be able to repair cracks etc. I've never used one and so don't know much about them. I also think there may be crack fillers available from some accessories shops but the location of the crack is important and may mean that replacement is the only option.

Replacing a windscreen on modern cars is not exactly a laughing easy saturday night job.
Problem is these are glued on with semastic that hardens.
The breakers use a special cutting wire - here in DK we call it "gold-wire" - by the look of it with a mix of what appears to be brass. A roll of this is about £25 here - enough for 20 windscreens I think. If you're carefull - and with an assistent - you may do with a couple of m's.
The work is done by carefully drilling a hole in the semastic - then using this hole as a starting point for cutting using the wire. The wire snaps if you rub agaist the chassis frame or the windscreen edge.
The replacement windscreen - and chassis frame - must be cleaned/cutted to accept a layer of fresh glue - which is available at most parts dealers & autoglass specialists.
When fitting the replacement windscreen - it MUST be held in a position from where it can be lowered EXACTLY into position first off.
Once in position - the glue sticks - virtually impossible to move the windscreen w/o breaking it.
Pieces of blankets/carpets will be needed to protect the bonnet paintwork.
