ax brake fluid "like jam"

Post by Jaf »

Hi guys, a friend has told me today that she had a problem with her brakes last week.

10m from home the brake pedal went spongy and the brakes only worked about 10% with frantic pumping (her house is on a steeeeep hill).

She recovered the car to the garage and they said the brake fluid was "like jam". They have replaced the brake fluid and she says the brakes are now fine.

My concern would be that some remnants of the "jam" could still be in the system. Does brake fluid clean out well? If it were my car I'd be changing the fluid again in a few weeks! Got to say I've never heard of the brake fluid going so badly off. My friend puts all her trust in the garage to look after her car, which she's had 10 years, but they don't even bother changing the brake fluid! Scary.

Cheers, Jaf

I must say I change my fluid approx every 2 years.
If they have bled each corner until new fluid comes out then I guess all should be fine.

Sounds rather like contamination - I wonder what happens if DOT 5 is added to DOT 4?

Hmm. Any idea how quickly the brake fluid would go wrong after adding LHM? Just that she had the car in the garage a month ago for Spanish MOT and servicing (including new brake pads). Not that there's a chance in hell of getting the garage to admit responsibility! If it is LHM will the brake system be alright now it's got DOT brake fluid in it?

i dont think the internal seals/rubber components will suffer putting citro blood into a DOT fluid system,
it certainly does the other way around though, as DOT fluid turns LHM system seals to gooooo,
