Xantia S2 HDI Power steering pipe needed URGENTLY please ?

Post by HDI »

A relatives Xantia is off the road with a blown main pressure feed pipe to the steering rack. This part has apparently been deleted by Citroen so it'll be a NOS or used one.
Can anyone help please ? In case it's relevant the car is an X reg.

As i'm sure you know its a one piece all the way and so is a total pita to remove, have they tried someone like pirtek to see if it can be repaired?

I do know about that issue. Pirtek wouldn't be able to help, I know them of old and their prices !

I don't know if gadget gricey has scrapped his xantia yet but he should have the part you need. (i'd still try and find someone to repair it though, maybe not pirtek but there's a place in luton that the jcb guys use, logically there will be other places near them that can do a similar job)

Car is still here, and the pipe is probably still in situ.

Any pics/detailed location and I can check.

As most of the front is off teh car, may make it a little easier to get too.

Get back to me if I can help.

I was thinking of your car Dave !! From memory the pressure feed runs from the rack to the pressure regulator, the one with the accumulator sphere on it.

it runs from the pump, with the other feed pipe, to the regulator, doesnt go into it, but goes past, has a rubber U in it to take it to the front cross member and runs round the outside(ish) of the bay taking it to the rack

Others have had new pipes made by Pirtek or their competitors - the pipe was £££ when available from Citroen, so the Pirtek jobbie is probably not too bad in that context :? It's only the ML5 boxed cars that the pipe is NFP for - but these are the ones that seem to burst....

I've never seen one off the car, what does it look like, mostly metal or mostly rubber ? Where does it usually fail ?

It looks like this (# 1 in pic):

I think it's either the longest or the second longest hydr. pipe in Xantia.
Usually corrosion destroys the metal - rubber -metal ends and mostly right side as shown in pic.(the end which is closer to the battery) has more corrosion on it.

Thanks for that. If it's a swaged joint thats failed I'd be able to get that repaired. I'll keep fingers X'd for the one off Daves car.

I don't know how those joint s can be fixed because they are pressed and whole pipe is made to be a "one piece" :(

Edit: Here is a pic where you can see the ends. Can they be fixed?

Yes, if the pipe ends are ok . The ferrules would be cut off after noting the alignment, then a new length of hose fitted and re-crimped. If I'd still got the equipment we used to have in our hose business I could do it easily. Another way to repair it would be to to use compression fittings with a male thread on the steel pipe ends, then make a hose up with female fittings. It would then become a 3 piece assembly.

Had this happen last year. Give Pliades a call and they will tap your old one and supply a new length of kunifer. The pipe is standard brake pipe, so methinks it should be easy to connect into the old one over the n/s wing - as routeing a long one is a right pita! Proviso 1, is that the pipe is sound across the lower bulkhead, and 2, that you can get hold of a flareing tool. As these are lhd designs originally, it seems it would be easier to turn the whole thing round and route it down the o/s - much easier to fit as you can see what you are doing. Need to allow for flexing etc, maybe a coil? My "flexible" rubber mount on the n/s had detached from the metal so I re-attached with araldite - checked and still in one piece.
Good luck.

Its not necessary the ML5 gearbox equipt ones that burst, its potentially ALL S2 cars !

This is because S1 feed pipes were coated from memory, but the S2 pipe was NOT coated at all, except a coating of "Conduit" along the near side edge where it passes over the end of the gearbox.

S1 pipe feeds DO fit S2 cars... as it follows the same path, on both cars. Having said that though, I fitted a Manual S1 feed pipe to an S2 Auto AL4 car. I think though it was a little longer but it was a while ago when I did it.

The complete route it out the end of the Pump on the engine, down and across the top of the sump to the regulator, it then behind the lower side of the regulator goes into the rubber hose for flex to compensate engine movment, then over to the front end of the chassis behind the air cleaner intake feed pipe, its then bolted by two bolts that DO rust badly it then runs out to the chassic rail and runs along the lower side over the end of the gearbox together with the main suspensin feed pipe (Hence two of them in that area) then to drops down to the corener edge of the subframe, runs along the leading lower inner edge of the subframe and up to the pinion valve.

Despite its location and positions, as long as the bracket bolts undo this pipe CAN be removed from the car, and re installed with the gearbox in place, and nothing major needs removing!! It looks worse then it is to do!
