How long has your C5 clutch lasted?

Post by Philjw »

Hi,
My mark 2 C5 has done 127K miles on the original clutch and I'm wondering how much longer it will last. What milages have yours done? Mine still drives OK but there is less "feel" on releasing the clutch - it's a bit like it's in or it's out with nothing much inbetween.

Perhaps mine holds the records for the earliest failure?

2006 C5 2.0HDi 138 - 29,000 miles :(

I would like to point out I dont drive around with the smell of burning clutch following me, I am very light on clutches. I dont sit and ride the clutch at junctions, my gearchanges are smooth and Id like to think I have mechanical sympathy.

Our C5II estate with the same engine has done 85K on its original clutch and its still going strong.

My last C5, 2004 2.0HDi 8v, was on its original clutch when I sold it at 84K miles.

My first C5, 2002 2.0HDi 8v, had its clutch replaced at 60K miles by its first owner. Now on 142K with a solid flywheel, 82K after it was fitted, its still fine.

Our first estate, 2002 2.0HDi 8v, had its original clutch changed at 105K as its friction plate was worn (changed as part of our deal to purchase it) but the DMF was fine.

I have heard that the 2.0HDi 138 16v had a problem with the gearbox oil seal leaked oil onto the clutch and caused a slip. I originally thought this was the problem with mine, however it wasn't due to oil contamination. The DMF had excess play, the clutch friction plate looked brand new. Dissapointing but hopefully its new replacement will last a while longer!

...unfortunately it doesn't. My dad's 2007 C5 2.0HDi 138 failed at 19,000 miles. He was not at all happy! It was only the DMF that had gone though, the clutch itself was like new. To put it into perspective his previous C5 2.2 HDi was still on its original clutch & DMF at 100K+ with no issues at all.

I think it was about 150-160k for the first one 2nd about 50miles and 2 days 3rd 2 weeks prob couple thousand 4th still going strong. 2 and 3 from the same garage auto tech in Port Glasgow dad was over here on holiday I cant say I would recomend them took them 3days for the first and 2 for the second, 4th JC Halidays in Campsie where she was bought and always serviced well till I got her and brought her back to Scotland.

Can anyone beat that for a short clutch life

I think mine is also on the original clutch at 149,000. I would expect it to last a lot longer, I have never replaced a clutch in an XM in over 15 years, the longest serving one had done 292,000 miles and was slipping but quite driveable. My 406 has done 204,000 and although the bite is high and it has the death 'squeak' it hasn't got noticably worse in the 16,000 miles since I bought it.

As far as I know my Xantia is still on its original clutch on 135k (no evidence of a clutch change in paperwork and it came with a FSH). Gear changes are still smooth but I expect it may need doing soon as it can be quite juddery taking off in first, of course that could be me having lumpfoot in the morning!

Had a new DMF fitted to the estate at 120,000 miles, unnecessary as it happened but would have needed doing before much longer, and had a new clutch fitted at the same time.
Current heap is on 181,000 and may well be on it's original clutch.

I was talking to one of the skip delivery drivers, haven't seen him for a year. He has an '02 C5 HDi same as mine and says his clutch is beginning to slip at 96,000 miles.
His only other problem with it was he heard a bit of a funny noise one day, was almost home so carried on.
As he turned it off outside his house there was a crack and a clang as the crankshaft pulley fell of into the street
