Xantia MOT fail/parts numbers needed.

Post by Stepto1 »

Well it had to happen....

Failed on,
Snapped handbrake cable. (broke when I parked at the garage!)
Front near side calliper leaking.
Offside front trackrod end cover split.
Near and offside rear brake pipes corroded.

Now I've found the balljoint and cables at GSF.
Can't work out what the brake pipes were though. The MOT man said they ran between the rubber hose and the middle of the car? Can anyone help?

It's a 2.0 HDI S2

Thanks very much.

Note that if it's a 110 HDI then the NS handbrake cable is different, and they use the largest brakes, and have larger track rod ends too, so be careful which ones you buy!

There are no flexis on the rear of the Xantia - the flex is accommodated by the spiral at the inboard end of the rear arm pivot. Get some Kunifer pipes made up (not by your local factor as they won't have the right flares!). There's been a few threads on it recently - it can cause some heart ache: Brake pipes 'mare

i still am not convinced Kunifer is any good for the coily brake pipes on hydraulic citroen's,
because i don't belive it will stand the stresses put on it by constantly being flexed as the suspension moves,

here is price and part No. for O/S track rod end to fit a XANT 2.0 HDI 90

Part Number Description Quantity Price excl. VAT Price incl. VAT Total incl. VAT Selection

and this one is for the 2.0 HDI 110#

Steel is less ductile than CuNifer so Steel pipe is the one most likely to fracture first in a long term fatigue test.
In practice the number of coils used for the Citroen rear arm pipes far exceeds the minimum flexibility needed.
Incorrect pipe clamping and over sharp pipe bends are the worst fatigue risks for either type of pipe when new.

Rear brake pipes are 96106389 and 96106390 cost about £100 the pair from Citroen 2 or 3 years ago when I did mine.

i agree if you were to constantly flex a straight length of both types the steel might give first,
but when coiled as in rear brake pipes the steel will give more springing and return to set state quicker,

kunifer will not spring back as quick as steel

superloopy wrote:So ... how do you get those neat coils in cunifer?

Does it bend easier than a steely which i'd assume you need a proper pipe bender for?
kunifer bend far easier than steel but to get neat coils use a former anything of similar diameterto the original coils,

some of these pipes are becoming to be made of unobtaium from the dealer though,

The only thing thats ever rubber at the rear is low pressure return hoses's that run along the TOP of the subframe out of view, and on exclusives theres rubber join sections on the sides of the strut "House" of the subframe. AS yours is an LX it wont have them.. you may need to get him to show you what he means.

90 bhp Xantias use the older XUD type calipers and cheaper pads and also the older smaller BE type gearbox.. where as said above 110s use larger Bosch V6 brakes and ML larger gearbox.

Both rear brake pipes from the stealers are £63 each.
The part numbers for mark 2 4885E1(N/S/R) length just under 2m long and 4885 E2 (O/S/R) 2462mm long.

I have done mine with cunifer pipe kindly made up by David Hallworth. Made the coils by turning around a scaffolding pipe which is the same diameter as the originals.

The pain part in changing is the K connector on the N/S above the rear cross member.

Thanks guys. Having fun here in Plymouth getting the HDI back on the road.

Think I'll have to go to the dealers to get the brake lines unless anyone knows a place down here in Devon that can make some up?

Ball joint got.

Hand brake cables ordered.

NSF brake caliber. Had a good look round and it was wet with LHM. Cleaned it up and couldn't find a leak until I squeezed the rubber boot where the hand brake arm passes through. Nearly got a face full of LHM! Guess the piston is leaking so a new Bosch calliper is on the cards unless there's a rebuild kit available?

Who says Xantia ownership is hardwork!?

Missing my old, simple 16V petrol Xantia. Three MOTs and only one failure on a steering rack gaitor!

What ever you do, don't buy the Citroen Steel pipes - as I pointed out in the other thread they will be a mare (if not impossible withouth dropping dismantling the subframe and anti-sink gear) to fit - and the price is  . Give Plaedies a ring in Sawtry with the lengths quoted in the other thread, and Martin will make some up and send them out. Granted you will need to make the spirals yourself, but a scaff tube or similar will do.

Trouble is it's in the hands of a local garage now. Got till next week to get the bits sorted.

Will they just make the pipes up and then the garage will have to bend them to fit?

Such a pain. Wish they were just normal brake lines.

Yes, but it's very easy to bend the Kunifer. It's quite difficult to feed the pipes in over the top of arm, and the long one has to come all behind the anti-sink valve / sphere. I had to bend them as I was putting them in, so there is no way the steel ones would go in.

Brill! Took your advice and have spoken to Martin at Plaedies. Two new pipes ordered and should be here in a few days so fingers crossed.

As ever, thanks very much and hope those measurements are right! Lol!

Citroen services will give you the exact length but if you have order 2.5m and 2.0m they will fit plus a little extra for playing with :) :!:
