C5 MK2 new calipers discs pads what a nightmare

Post by marco f1 »

hi all just had new rear callipers, discs, and pads fitted to my C5 54 reg and what a pain in the backside 08.30am drop off 5.45pm pick up totaly seized bent and snaped bolts, build up of corrosion on face plate having to be chipped away.. but all new parts fitted now, the garage said it was one of the worst jobs he has ever done in his life and will think again about taken on another one bearing in mind my car is a one prev owner car with full dealer service history so if you are thinking of doing it yourself have a very very very big think about it.... and do what i did give it to a garage... i hope this helps as i dont like to see any one in the s##t .......

I removed my rear callipers last year due to the know squealing noise & corrosion, cleaned them up and swapped drivers to passenger and vice versa.

Sad story, but thanks for the heads-up, I shall check mine as soon as it stops raining!!
Did my front ones last Christmas, no problem, but the rear ones get mostly ignored.

If these caliper bolts have never been removed before, they are a nightmare to get out, I have to use ear defenders whilst airgunning them out
You would be mad to try them at home to be honest. I have found that heating up the caliper helps as it melts the "glue" that holds it all together so tight.
Best to budget for new calipers, as they are relatively cheap now, and most come with new bolts

my local dealer told me they don't bother trying to salvage the old calipers anymore but just lop off the hole lot and fit everything new, as this is cheaper than there fitters spending 5 hour's trying to save the calipers, at dealers hourly rate at least,

Having had BXs and Xantias, I know how difficult it can be to remove rear calipers. So when my C5 was in its first year I easily removed one bolt at a time, cleaned it up, coated it with copper grease, then replaced it. The bolts have never shown any tendancy to come loose and yet a couple of weeks ago when I removed the calipers to clean and grease the joint faces and fit new discs and pads, the job was so easy.

Looks good Marco. How much did you pay? I may need some for this 'new' C5. Haven't looked yet - head in sand mode activated :(

yer mate the calipers cost me £79.99 a pair and £4.99 dell and that included the fitting kit for the pads ..... which is better than £56 for each caliper and £8.79 + vat each for the fitting kit. that is what my local car spares shop were going to charge me. so what a bargain.. these caliper dealers also advertise on ebay.. hope this helps

Thanks Marco, I'm sure there will be other interested parties too. My last one, on the other C5, was £88 for the caliper.
