The strange thing about all this FAP DPF rubbish is that the later 2.0 L 16v has it and they give over 60 mpg for that :?

The FAP is a different design on later cars and looking at it I suspect has somewhat lower resistance, though I don't believe that this is the reason later cars are better. The original design seems to be able to achieve diff pressures of less than 10mB when clean which doesn't seem excessive to me. I have long believed that the problems lie in the head and turbo matching. Something I have always been meaning to do and never got around to it is to see what the consumption is like with the swirl valves locked closed i.e turn it into a 12 Valve engine.

I had forgotton about those, do they have an effect on consumption, if so would it be better to remove them?

Well they certainly have an effect on low end performance if left open,
Basically they are shut until about 2300 rpm at which point they open. If locked open I know the low end torque / acceleration is very poor.
Never tried them locked shut, up to 2300 there should be no appreciable difference, after 2300 performance may drop of... or not :-).
On this engine the valves appear to be Bang Bang i.e open or shut but on some other engines that I have looked at which have a similar system they appear to be proportional.

Sorry to resurect this thread again but I now have a set of leather heated seats, thanks in no small measure to Mike from Parkstone, but I can't find this 80 amp maxi blade fuse. Ah, I have just read the previous post again and it seems to be under the main fuse panel, couldn't get that out, will try again, hope to do better next time. Do you have to remove the large terminal in front of it?
