Thanks for that--lol.
So was the thrust bearing fitted to clutch plate on the 16v.
Anyone done a Vauxhall Cresta type car clutch---4 little screws to get tin bottom bell housing off--4 prop bolts-2 bolts at top on outside of gearbox-2 inside at bottom- two gearchange rods, and gearbox came off with rest of bell housing still fitted to engine. Clutch, once unbolted, dropped through the bottom of bellhousing. About one and a bit hours-all in.
Not like todays lashups. ](*,) :-({|= :wave2:

Im sure I heard about somebody driving through the glass window in the showroom/workshop?

Many stories of test drives on the "mad mile", Dave said he had a Super Van 3 up to 85mph down there and said, all he was thinking, "I hit a stone, its going on its roof!"

Also, Im sure about this, Dave said he started taking a gearbox out a DS that had been parked up round the back for another car to get it on the road, he didnt know anything about the DS so assumed it was for spares but half way through taking the gearbox out, a customer turned up and asked if he was finally fixing the car

Just had the clutch done at my local Citroen Independent - £450 + VAT incl Labour & Clutch kit

Sounds like the job was a right PITA and they needed it in overnight to finish!

HUGE difference with the pedal - feels a LOT lighter as in now less than a quarter of the pressure needed to push the pedal down. Its great!

Asked about crunchy 3rd gear - he can fit a new synchro hub in situ - £140 for the hub and 3 hours labour including cleaning up inside the box. Seriously considering it! He says he has done a fair few!

I think that & the clutch will transform the car as I love driving it but the double declutching is a pain - especially overtaking up hills!

I had 2nd thoughts about a 2nd hand box - most that were available were lying around in yards and as the crunchy synchro seems to be a common issue, and with my luck I would end up with one that was almost as bad as mine!! Plus there was a risk that the ratios might be different eg Higher reving at 70 etc

Nick has changed the synchro in situ so that the box doesn't have to come out again.

Still considering it.....

i have always thought it is 5th gear syncro can be replaced in situ and all the others the box has to come out,

also i think it has been said on here the later box does not suffer with this fault,
